ACRL 2011 National Conference Travel Grants for Spectrum Scholars, USA

The ACRL 2011 National Conference will be held in historic Philadelphia, March 30 – April 2, 2011. The ACRL National Travel Grants provide opportunities for Spectrum Scholars to participate in ACRL professional development activities at the conference, to expand their network of colleagues, and to have face-to-face time to build new, or strengthen existing, relationships with mentors participating in the ACRL E.J. Josey Mentoring Program for Spectrum Scholars.

Award

Five (5) awards consisting of complimentary advanced early bird registration (a value of $95-$375) and $600 cash for travel expenses. The application deadline is November 9, 2010 (11:59 p.m. Central Time).

Eligibility Criteria

* Must be current or past recipient of an ALA Spectrum Scholarship and a first-time attendee at an ACRL National Conference.
* Must be current ACRL student or personal member.
* Previous recipients are not eligible.
* Incomplete submissions will not be considered.

Application Process

1. Spectrum Scholars should request an ACRL Travel Grant Application by emailing spectrum@ala.org.
2. All applicants must be current, personal members of ACRL at the time of application and must be recipients of the ALA Spectrum Scholarship.
3. A completed ACRL Travel Grant Application includes an application sheet with personal statements, current resume/curriculum vitae, and a Statement of Support. The Statement of Support should be from a supervisor or an LIS professor/dean comment and should address the applicant’s qualifications and how attendance at the ACRL 2011 National Conference will benefit them professionally and/or personally. The application and cv must be sent electronically as one document (one attachment) and directed to kdeiss@ala.org and spectrum@ala.org. Statements of Support can be included in the applicant’s single attachment or submitted separately; they should also be sent to kdeiss@ala.org and spectrum@ala.org.
4. Applicants should not register for the ACRL 15th National Conference until notified of their status to avoid the need for refunds. The discounted early-bird registration rate will be extended for all scholarship applicants until February 25, 2011 for those that may not receive a scholarship, but still want to attend.

The deadline for receipt of the application and statement of support is November 9, 2010 (11:59 p.m. Central Time).

Selection Criteria

The ACRL E.J. Josey Mentoring Program for Spectrum Scholars Committee will select the recipients.
# Recipients will be selected based on their commitment to academic librarianship, their desired learning outcomes for attending the conference, their financial and professional development needs as evidenced from their responses to open-ended questions on the application form.
# The strength of their supporting statement from a supervisor or LIS professor/dean.
# Preference may be given to Spectrum Scholars who have applied for an academic librarianship mentor through the ACRL E.J. Josey Mentoring Program for Spectrum Scholars.

ACRL 2011 National Conference Student Scholarship, USA

To provide opportunities for library school students to participate in an ACRL professional development experience and to learn more about current issues and developments in academic and research libraries

Goals

• Provide students with an active, positive interaction with ACRL which will strengthen their understanding of and interest in academic librarianship
• Provide students with a professional development opportunity that will assist them in building a network of colleagues
• Increase library school students’ participation in ACRL professional development activities
• Increase ACRL’s efforts toward being a more inclusive organization

Award

Ten scholarships will be awarded. Each will include complimentary registration (a $95 value), and $600 stipend to attend the ACRL 2011 National Conference, March 30-April 2, 2011 in Philadelphia, PA. The total value of each scholarship is $695.

Eligibility Criteria

Scholarship applicants must be:
• Enrolled full-time at an ALA-accredited institution (full-time status as defined by your institution)
• Recommended by the library school dean or director

Application Process

1. Obtain a recommendation from their dean/director in electronic form that can be cut and pasted into the application (not to exceed 300 words).
2. Complete the online Library School Student Scholarship Application. The application includes a brief summary of the applicant’s progress towards their degree and as well as a description of how attendance at the ACRL National Conference will support their long-term goals (not to exceed 300 words).

NOTE: Only electronic submissions via the Library School Student Scholarship Application will be considered. The form does not allow submissions to be saved and resumed. Prepare your answers and have your dean/director’s recommendation obtained before starting the online application. Please double-check all your answers before pushing the ‘submit’ button.

The award committee consists of members of the National Conference Scholarship Subcommittee. The committee will strive to achieve both diversity and balance among scholarship recipients based on the following factors:
• Responses to open-ended questions on the application form
• Dean/director recommendation
• Educational experience, background and geographical diversity

In awarding the scholarships, special attention will be given to students from diverse backgrounds. Preference will be given to students who are current members of ALA and ACRL and to students whose graduate programs provide matching financial support for their attendance. Preference will also be given to individuals who have not previously been awarded an ACRL scholarship. Individuals may only receive one ACRL scholarship per professional development event.

ACRL 2011 Virtual Conference Scholarship, USA

This online conference will include live, interactive Webcasts, slidecasts of face-to-face sessions, discussion boards, audio blogs, speaker materials and more. The event will take place in a dedicated online conference community that will also serve participants attending the event in Philadelphia March 30-April 2, 2011. This will afford unique opportunities for collaboration, learning and networking among all conference participants – both live and online. As a virtual conference participant, you won’t ever have to leave your desk!

Purpose

To provide opportunities for academic and research library support staff to update their skills and knowledge by participating in the ACRL 2011 Virtual National Conference.

Goals

• Enhance applicant’s ability to provide excellent services to constituent groups
• Strengthen student applicant’s understanding of and interest in academic librarianship
• Provide applicants with an active, positive interaction with ACRL that will strengthen membership and provide applicants an opportunity to increase their network of colleagues
• Increase participation in ACRL’s online professional development activities
• Increase ACRL’s efforts toward being a more inclusive organization worldwide

Award

Twelve scholarships will be awarded. Each will include complimentary registration (a $185 value) for the ACRL Virtual National Conference. This scholarship provides complimentary registration for the Virtual National Conference online only. There is no computer, Web connection, or technical support included.

Technical Requirements

You will need a computer system that allows for e-mail and Web browsing.

• Currently employed in an academic or research library or a full time library school student (full-time as defined by your institution)
• Recommended by their library dean or director
