PhD Research Scholarship in Anthropology/Archaeology/History, JCU, Australia

This multi-disciplinary project will provide a systematic history of ethnographic collecting in the Wet Tropics of North Queensland. Covering the period from the 1870s to the present, it will explore the diverse ways in which Aboriginal people, collectors and museums have expressed their interests and property rights in the collected artefacts. It will also analyse the ways in which Aboriginal people of the Wet Tropics have vested these artefacts with their regional and other identities. By doing so, it will shed new light on current debates about the ownership and value of Indigenous artefacts and contribute to the development of innovative ways of presenting Indigenous peoples’ connections with their material cultural heritage.
Expectations:
The successful applicant will have an academic background (Honours degree or higher) in one or more of the disciplines of anthropology, archaeology or history. She or he will join the multi-disciplinary research team listed above, and will be enrolled as a PhD candidate at
James Cook University, based at either the Townsville or Cairns campus. He or she is expected to participate in research team meetings and contribute to the success of the overarching research project.
The applicant will define his or her own PhD topic within the parameters of the project as a whole. Potential PhD topics include, but are not limited to: histories of local indigenous museums in the Wet Tropics; histories of property claims as they relate to transactions in indigenous artefacts from the Wet Tropics; analyses of specific collections or categories of artefacts deriving from the Wet Tropics. Interdisciplinary topics are particularly encouraged but single-discipline topics are also welcome.
Value: A stipend of $22,500 per annum (tax free) for three years plus $7000 project support.

IRCHSS Government Post-Graduate Scholarships in the Humanties and Social Sciences

IRCHSS schemes support research in the historical, analytical, theoretical and empirical study of subjects which normally fall within the humanities and social sciences, including law and business studies. While applications may relate only to those subject areas listed, there are a broad range of sub or inter-disciplinary areas which normally fall within the humanities and social sciences and are therefore eligible for consideration under this programme.
Women’s Studies is one such example of a multi-disciplinary field which, through rigorous scholarship and analysis, draws on traditional humanities and social science to offer a new perspective.
When will the results of this scheme be conveyed to applicants?
The assessment of this scheme will not be concluded before August 2011, at which point applicants will be informed by letter of the outcome. The secretariat will not discuss the results of the scheme over the telephone.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 21st February 2011

EMIN-Erasmus Mundus Joint Master in Economics and Management of Network Industries

The EMIN Joint Master Programme offers the opportunity to acquire expertise in network industries management from a global perspective that covers both the economic/regulatory and technological/management issues. In these industries, teaching, training and research are typically carried out solely by focused specialists, which usually results in a skewed perspective. The purpose of this Master is to continue integrating specialists from different perspectives and nationalities, and to make them interact in an interdisciplinary program to address the main problems faced by network industries in the current context of economic crisis and environmental concern. Our master students will learn the relevant engineering, economics, policy and management principles in the network and infrastructure industries. These skills and knowledge will be acquired and used together in real-life problems, as this course is dedicated to training qualified professionals.

EMIN Joint Master Programme was awarded in 2006 with the Erasmus Mundus excellence label by the European Commission, award renewed for another 5 years in 2010. This excellence label has been granted only to 126 Masters and 22 doctorates in all disciplines and Universities across Europe so far. Comillas also coordinates the Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate in Sustainable Energy Technologies and Strategies (SETS Joint Doctorate).

Duration
The EMIN is a two-year joint programme (120 ECTS) with two separate phases:
Training period (90 ECTS): 3 semesters of lectures at the partner universities worth 30 ECTS each.
Master Thesis and internships (30 ECTS): to be carried by students at any of the EMIN partner universities, with the collaboration of the industry partners that will support the development of professional internship of EMIN students during the last stage of their studies.
