Phyllis Irene Grey Fellowships in Veterinary Science – Postgraduate, New Zealand

These Fellowships are established under the terms of the Will of the late Phyllis Irene Grey.

1. There shall be Fellowships to be called the Phyllis Irene Grey Fellowships in Veterinary Science.

2. The Fellowships shall be open to female Veterinary Science students with a particular interest in animal health research.

3. The Fellowships shall be used –

(a) to pursue a course of study in research into animal health for the Bachelor of Philosophy into animal health;

(b) to pursue a course of study towards a postgraduate degree or diploma in research into animal health;

(c) to assist in the payment of education towards the Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree.

4. The Fellowships shall be awarded annually and shall have a maximum value of $1,000 per annum for an undergraduate and $3,000 per annum for a graduate. A lesser or greater amount may apply depending on the available income, or proportion which may also be used to support the research of the recipient, this to be nominated at the time of the award.

5 If, for any reason, there are no applicants, or applicants are deemed unsuitable, the income shall be accumulated and according to the judgment of the University, either more Fellowships or a Fellowship of greater value shall be offered later.

6. The Fellowships shall be awarded on the recommendation of the Executive of the Institute of Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences.

7. Application forms are available from the Research and Postgraduate Studies Office, IVABS, and should be submitted to the Graduate Research School by 1 December for the year preceding that in which the award is made. However, in special circumstances and when finance permits consideration may be given to applications received other than by the normal closing date.

8. Applicants should include in their application, their curriculum vitae, academic record and any material establishing financial need.

PhD Position:Novel Antifouling Coatings Based on Enzymes, Denmark

Joint Ph.D. project between The Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (www.kt.dtu.dk) and Hempel A/S (www.Hempel.com).

Background and aim:
Growth of marine organisms on the hull of ships (fouling) is a major problem resulting in increased fuel consumption, reduced speed and increased docking times and maintenance cost. The fouling is usually controlled by painting the underwater parts of ships with antifouling coatings. The best performing solution for antifouling paint is based on TriButylTin, but has effectively been banned and replaced by other solutions. Most of the present, tin-free and solvent-based coating systems rely on the action of Cu2O and organic biocides. Although this is considered friendlier to the environment there is a need to develop better solutions. In this project we will attempt to develop new types of antifouling coatings based on enzymes.

Project contents
The project will consist of:

  • Literature survey on antifouling coatings and enzymatic possibilities.
  • Laboratory testing of enzymatic solutions.
  • Design and formulation of novel antifouling coatings.
  • Test and evaluation of novel solutions.
  • Explaining the underlying physical and chemical mechanisms of the new systems.
  • Full-scale testing.

During the project there will be close co-operation with coating producer Hempel A/S, in particular the Spanish R&D center.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have a M.Sc. degree in chemical engineering and top grades.

Salary and appointment terms:
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.

Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia Scholarship, New Zealand

This Scholarship was established in 2005 and is financed by the Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia (PSEA) to encourage the advancement of, and research and teaching in, the Philosophy of Education.

This Scholarship is designed to further the interests of the Society by encouraging doctoral students to engage with philosophical issues in education, and to recognise and support philosophical research in the wider field of education.

The successful recipient will become a member of PESA and will be expected to present a paper at the Society’s annual conference.

Selection Process:
Application is made to the Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia (www.pesa.org.au).
A Selection Committee assesses the applications.
Two Scholarships may be awarded each year.

Regulations:
1.The Scholarship shall be known as the Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia Scholarship.
2.Two non-renewable Scholarships may be awarded per year, each to a value of AUD$10,000.
3.The Scholarship is not related to the recipient’s level of income and may be taken up in addition to other awards.
4.The Scholarship is tenable by students resident in either Australia or New Zealand and enrolled fulltime in a recognised doctoral programme in either country.
5.Proposals will be considered from the various sub-disciplines in Education, from the Arts, and Sciences, as well as from professional educators, as long as the research is germane to the ongoing conversations and dialogues of educational philosophy.
6.The research design and methodology may cover theoretical, empirical, and substantive considerations, but it needs to contribute to philosophical debate in the field of education.
7.To ensure adequate philosophical supervision, the candidate’s main supervisor must be someone who by virtue of qualifications, experience, research knowledge or chosen profession would be eligible for full membership of PESA, as per the Society rues (www.pesa.org.au).
8.The basis of selection will be academic merit, taking into account (a) academic progress; (b) Curriculum Vitae and publication record; (c) alignment of proposed research with Regulations 5, 6, and 7 above; and (d) an equitable distribution between Australian and New Zealand applicants.
9.The Scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee appointed by the PESA Executive.
10.The student awarded a Scholarship shall (a) attend the Annual PESA Conference and present a paper refereed for that Conference; and (b) present a satisfactory progress report to the PESA secretary 12 months after the award of the scholarship.
11.The Scholarship’s emolument will be paid in two equal instalments, on completion of each of the requirements of Regulation 10 above.
12.The PESA Executive has power to terminate or suspend a Scholarship, if it receives an unsatisfactory report on the progress of a scholar from his/her supervisor, director or head of academic unit.
13.In the event of there being no suitable applicants, the Scholarship will not be offered in any year.
