MA Music Bursary, University of Bristol, UK

Job Description: The Department of Music is pleased to be able to offer two bursaries, each worth £2,500, to read for a taught MA in Music at Bristol University during the academic year 2010-11. One bursary is open to all taught MA in Music applicants, the other is specifically for a Bristol Arts graduate.

The bursaries are managed through the University’s Centenary Campaign and have been made available thanks to the generosity of anonymous donors from the University’s alumni community.

In the case of the bursary only open to Bristol Arts graduates, all students (home and overseas) graduating from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Bristol in June 2009 or June 2010 are eligible to apply.
Both bursaries may be used to offset tuition fees on any MA Music pathway, including the MA in Composition for Film and Television.

The bursaries are available either for full-time or part-time study. In the case of full-time study, half of the bursary will be awarded at the beginning of each Semester. Where it is awarded for part-time study, half of the bursary will be awarded at the beginning of the first part-time year and the other half at the beginning of the second.

To apply for the bursaries, you must already have applied for, and been accepted onto, a Bristol University MA Music programme for 2010-11. Please mark your application “Bristol Masters Music Bursary.” You can see all the details on how to apply for these courses on the Graduate School of Arts and Humanities website.

You should then complete the Bursary Application Form (Word document, 43Kb) and return it no later than 30 July 2010 to University of Bristol, Graduate School of Arts & Humanities, 7 Woodland Road, Bristol, BS8 1TB, or to artf-gradschool@bristol.ac.uk

If you have already applied for an MA place, and wish to be considered for the bursary, please complete the Bursary Application Form as above.

The successful candidate will be notified within four weeks of the closing date.

Eligibility
1. Candidates for the bursary must be current applicants for an MA in Music at the University of Bristol.

2. Candidates must be in receipt of an offer and have accepted their offer prior to the closing date (30 July 2010)

3. Candidates for one of the two bursaries must have graduated from the Faculty of Arts, University of Bristol in either June 2010 or June 2009

4. Candidates are permitted to accept only one scholarship or bursary. Candidates in receipt of any other scholarships and awards will not be eligible.

C Wright Mills Scholarship in Sociology and Anthropology, New Zealand

Job Description: This scholarship was established in 1985 in memory of Jean Margaretta Rhoda Morgan and Peter Warmsley Sedgwick, and as a tribute to C. Wright Mills, noted American sociologist.

1. The scholarship shall be known as the C. Wright Mills Scholarship in Sociology and Anthropology.

2. The scholarship shall be awarded by the Council of the University of Canterbury after it has received the recommendation of a Selection Committee consisting of:
i. the Vice-Chancellor or nominee;
ii. the Head of the School of Sociology and Anthropology or nominee;
iii. the donor or nominee;
iv. a member of another Department or School of the University, the said member to be nominated by the donor or nominee.

3. The scholarship shall be open to graduates of any University in New Zealand or of the University of the South Pacific.

4. Candidates for the scholarship shall submit a paper outlining their approach to sociological and anthropological research in the form of a research proposal. The paper shall be typewritten and of not less than 5,000 words in length. The Selection Committee, in making its recommendation concerning the award of the scholarship, shall have regard to the paper submitted by each candidate, and to the contribution the candidate might be expected to make to academic life of the School of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Canterbury.

5. In the event of two or more candidates being considered to be of equal merit, preference shall be given to the candidate whose financial circumstances are such that he or she would have difficulty in completing the course without financial assistance.

6. Tenure of the scholarship shall be conditional upon the successful candidate enrolling for the degree of Master of Arts (by thesis only), or Ph.D., in Sociology or Anthropology at the University of Canterbury. The scholarship shall be taken up for the research and writing of a thesis for the said degree on a topic approved by the selection committee. If the candidate has already commenced a PhD or Masters thesis then a progress report shall be required for consideration by the selection committee.

7. The scholarship may be held concurrently with any bursary, scholarship or fellowship of equal or greater value than this scholarship, unless the conditions of the other award preclude this.

8. The scholarship shall be tenable normally for one year but may be extended for a further year on the recommendation of the Academic Board if in the opinion of the selection committee the holder is able to demonstrate by way of a report on the work that satisfactory progress is being made and that the progress is consistent with the criteria for selection.

9. The scholarship may be terminated by the Council at any time on receipt of a report from the selection committee that the conduct or progress of the scholar has been unsatisfactory.

10. Normally one scholarship shall be awarded each year. However, if the accumulated funds permit the Council may award an additional scholarship in any year.

11. If in any year no appointment to the scholarship is made, the income for the year shall be added to the capital of the fund or shall be held in reserve to provide a second scholarship in a subsequent year, as the Council may decide.

12. Conditions for the award of the scholarship may be varied from time to time by the Council of the University on the recommendation of the selection committee.

Dennis William Moore Scholarship

Job Description: The Dennis William Moore Scholarship was established in 1999 as a result of a capital donation to the University of Canterbury from the Estate of Dennis William Moore, a Minister of Religion of Hari Hari and an Electrical Inspector. The capital donation was used to set up the Dennis William Moore Fund.

The scholarship is tenable for a thesis student in astronomy who has been or will be undertaking observational work at Mt John as part of his/her thesis work.

The scholarship shall be known as the Dennis William Moore Scholarship. 4. The scholarship shall be awarded by the University Council on the recommendation of a Selection Committee comprising:
i. the Vice-Chancellor, or nominee;
ii. the Dean of the Faculty of Science
iii. the Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

5. The scholarship may be held with any other bursary, scholarship, prize or fellowship unless the conditions of the other award preclude it, provided that the Selection Committee may in determining the amount of the award take into account the number and nature of any other awards held by the successful applicant.
