July, 2010 | Scholarship for Nigerians and Africans - Part 9

PhD Scholarship of Physics

Active participation in one of the research projects:
1. Quantum communication and quantum techniques.
a. Study of novel multi-photon entangled states, and new ways to generate and to analyze entangled
states in the experiments.
b. Limitations of quantum informational processes.
2. Characterization of information processing by quantum networks with noise.
3. Bound entanglement and quantum information processing.
4. New approach to statistical description of quantum dynamical systems.
5. Spectroscopic characterization of materials for quantum processing.
6. Characterization of fluoride and oxide materials doped with selected Ln ions for purpose of photon down conversion
and cascade emission.
7. Modern persistent luminescence and storage materials.
8. Resonance excitation energy and polarization transfer in nanolayers.

Profile of candidates: (for more details see the Web page)
1. MA degree in physics, technical physics, mathematics (or other, with good background in physics).
2. Good command of English.
3. Motivation to conduct state-of-the-art research in theoretical and/or experimental physics.

Required documents:
1. A letter of motivation, explaining (briefly) candidate’s interests. This is especially important in case of candidates
who studied disciplines other than physics.
2. A copy of candidates MA thesis (in electronic version, preferably in .pdf format file).
3. Authenticated copy of the MA diploma, or an equivalent document proving that the candidate already passed MA exam.
4. Opinion of the candidate’s diploma supervisor.
5. Curriculum vitae containing information on:
* candidate’s education and marks he/she obtained during the studies (this should be authenticated
by corresponding authorities);
* candidates previous (if any) scientific career (publications, experience, conferences, etc.);
* other information which the candidate considers important or favorable.

International Scholarship for Undergraduate Students

The University has a long tradition of welcoming international students from around the world and is pleased to be able to offer a number of scholarships for entry at undergraduate level.

The scholarships will be worth £5000 per annum (for up to three years of study) towards the cost of tuition fees and are offered to nationals of any country paying international fees.

Application deadline is 31 July 2010.

Macquarie University

The PhD student will pursue a research program on planetary nebulae under the direction of Professor Quentin Parker and within the rapidly expanding Macquarie University (MQ) in Astronomy and Astrophysics group. Planetary nebulae, the extended shrouds of dying stars, are a fascinating, brief period in the life of most stars.

They are unique celestial laboratories thanks to their rich emission line spectra and are amongst the most beautiful and mysterious of objects. Behind their beauty hides the mystery of how stars return carbon, one of life’s essential building blocks – to interstellar space.

This project will constitute the next major breakthrough in understanding these processes and addresses several significant astrophysical problems in the field via unique Australian data and instrumentation. Specifically the student.

The MQ Astronomy group enjoys very close links with the Australian Astronomical Observatory (AAO) located nearby and the AAO is a partner institute on this proposal so the appointee would be expected to spend up to 1 third of their time at the AAO.

Initial inquiries should be directed to the principal supervisor, Professor Quentin Parker, email: quentin.parker@mq.edu.au, phone: 02 9850 8910

The 2010 MQRES full-time stipend rate is $22,500 pa tax exempt for 3.5 years.

Application deadline : 15 Aug 2010
