PhD positions at the Department of Theology, Uppsala University, Sweden

The holder of a PhD position shall, foremost, be devoted to his or her own postgraduate study and research. Other duties at the Department which relate to teaching and administrative work may be included within the scope of the employment (to a maximum of 20 %). A requirement for employment as doctoral student is that the applicant must be admitted to postgraduate studies. To this extent, the applicant’s ability to successfully complete the doctoral studies will be decisive. The successful applicant will be supported the first year with a doctoral grant and the remaining three years by a doctoral studentship. Regulations governing University admissions are found (in Swedish) in Högskoleförordningen, chapter 7 §§ 34-36 and chapter 5 §§ 1-7. Information on admissions requirements, application forms etc. can be found on the website of the Department of Theology: or by contacting study counselor Malin Ekström, (malin.ekstrom@teol.uu.se) ph. 018-4712169.

Applications should include:

* official transcripts of academic results from university studies, including any graduate studies which prove that the candidate meets both general and particular qualification requirements for studies at research level at the Faculty of Theology. In relevant cases a copy of the candidate’s degree certificate should also be included,
* a project description of 6 pages with the following headings: aim, questions, material, method, theoretical framework, the relation of the study to earlier research and material for the future thesis. All headings should be included,
* completed application form for admission to postgraduate studies/Antagning till forskarutbildning,
* suggestion for financial plan for studies at research level – see detailed information attached to the form “financial plan”,
* essays written at C- and D-level and in relevant cases, E-level,
* note about who you have approached and asked to become your supervisor.

Postdoctoral in Mechatronics with Application to Traffic Safety, Sweden

You will be involved in mainly two research activities, both concerning traffic safety. The first topic is cooperative driving which will be carried out partly together with the other postdocs recruited to the department. The second topic is development of algorithms for detecting critical traffic situation based on sensor signals. Also this research will be carried out in connection with other researchers, both from academia and from industry.

Eligibility:
Required qualifications You have a recent Ph.D. degree in a subject related to any of the fields signal processing, automatic control or mechatronics. You have a good theoretical background and interest to work on real world problems. Experience in traffic safety, vehicle dynamics, data mining, detection theory and filtering is an advantage. Furthermore, an interest in interdisciplinary work with researchers and engineers from other fields is essential, as are skills in simulation techniques and mathematical analysis. You should have excellent command of spoken and written English and have good collaborative skills. Teaching experience is an advantage.

Application procedure

The application shall be written in English and include the following items:

1. An application of a maximum of one A4 page containing your specific qualifications for the position

PhD Stipend in Bioinformatics, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Denmark

Within recent years, it has become evident that non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) play numerous important roles in the cell. Many ncRNAs contain a characteristic RNA structure, a hallmark that (albeit often at a high computational cost) can be exploited by in silico screens. These screens are in essence based on a search for RNA secondary structures. The goals of the Ph.D. project is to design methods to conduct in particular local structural alignments of RNA structures to be exploited for structure search in genomic sequence as well as structural clustering of the RNAs.The project will be carried out in collaboration with people in the Center for non-coding RNA in Technology and Health.

Qualification requirements
The applicant should hold professional as well as personal skills and qualifications as stated below:
* A master degree in Bioinformatics, computational biology, biology or similar.
* Basic knowledge of biological sequences.
* Experience with algorithm development.
* Experience with Perl or Python (or similar)
* Experience with one (or more) of C, C++ or Java.
* It is an advantage (but not a requirement) to have general knowledge about RNA structure and folding, RNA gene search algorithms and algorithms for structural alignment or RNAs.
* The Ph.D. candidate should also possess good interpersonal skills.

Scholarship Application Deadline: February 1st, 2011
