February, 2011 | Scholarship for Nigerians and Africans - Part 120

Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, University of Cambridge, UK

A three year PhD project (funded by an EPSRC research grant) is available, to be held in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) of the University of Cambridge. The successful candidate will play an integral role in a wider project considering the prediction of noise generation by large aeroengines for passenger aircraft. The wider project involves researchers at the Cambridge University Whittle Laboratory and Cranfield University. The successful candidate will be supervised by Professor Nigel Peake in DAMTP.

The PhD project will involve the application of a wide range of analytical, asymptotic and numerical techniques to study the generation of sound inside the aeroengine and its propagation to the environment. Particular aspects of the project will focus on turbomachinery noise and its scattering downstream by the jet. Peake leads an active research group in DAMTP working in this area, and together with colleagues in Cambridge has strong industrial links with Rolls Royce plc.

Applicants should have (by the start of the project) a 4-year honours degree (at least II.I or equivalent) or Masters in Mathematics, or in a cognate discipline with high mathematical content. Although a background in fluid mechanics and wave theory would undoubtedly be helpful, it is more important for the student to have an enthusiasm for using sophisticated mathematical techniques to understand real-world problems. The studentship offers tuition fees, (at the home/EU level) a stipend for three years equivalent to the standard EPSRC funding level, and support for travel. The studentship is not available to citizens of non-EU countries. However, the stipend is payable to any EU candidate, even those not eligible for conventional departmental studentship maintenance awards from the EPSRC.

Career Development Fellowship in Population Health Career Development 2011 in Australia

These fellowships are available for public health and health service delivery research.

Fellowships can be taken full-time or part-time. Part-time fellowships are available for researchers who want to maintain an active role in the delivery of public health services or the development of public health policy.

Part-time fellowships are available for 30-70% of a full-time position, with the value of the award pro-rated accordingly. Applications for part-time fellowships must be justified in professional terms. Applicants must plan to combine their public health or policy development practice work with their research and be able to demonstrate an interface between the two.

Qualifications:

Applicants at CDF Level 1 will normally have at least 2 and less than 7years post-doctoral experience from the date of the letter advising that their doctoral thesis was passed (as at 31 March of the application year) unless exceptional circumstances exist (refer to Section 7.3 Exceptional Circumstances).

Applicants at CDF Level 2 will normally have at least 7 and less than 12years post-doctoral experience from the date of the letter advising that their doctoral thesis was passed (as at 31 March of application year) unless exceptional circumstances exist (refer to Section 7.3 Exceptional Circumstances).

Applicants qualified to apply at CDF Level 1:

May additionally apply at CDF Level 2, in which case two separate applications will need to be submitted (each of which will assessed independently of the other).

Are able to apply at CDF Level 2 only if they wish to do so.
Applicants who do not hold a PhD but can demonstrate an equivalent research qualification (eg a professional doctorate) may also be eligible toapply.

Current or Former CDA or CDF Holders

Prior to the 2007 application year (for awards commencing in 2008), CDAs were a single level award of 5 years duration. Those who have held or currently hold one of these ‘old scheme’ CDAs:

  • Are not eligible to apply at CDF Level 1; and
  • May apply at CDF Level 2 if they are qualified to do so.
  • Applicants who have held or currently hold a CDA/CDF Level 1 award:
  • Are not eligible to apply for a CDF at Level 1; and
  • Are eligible to apply for a CDF at Level 2 if they are qualified to do so.
  • Applicants who have held or currently hold a CDA/CDF Level 2 award are
not eligible to apply for a CDF Level 1 or CDF Level 2.
