Erasmus Mundus Master in Materials Science Exploring Large Scale Facilities(MaMaSELF)

Modern life and globalisation imply new and additional exigencies for scientists and scientific engineers in the field of scientific and industrial competitiveness. This holds specifically for the development of new technologies and new materials which are important key-products and which contribute to the technological and scientific competitiveness of highly industrialized countries. The characterisation of these materials and also the optimising of technologies strongly demand sophisticated methods, some of them uniquely available at “Large Scale Facilities” using neutrons or synchrotron radiation.

MaMaSELF is a two-year full time European Masters program in Materials Science, building up a European platform, strongly involving “Large Scale Research Facilities”. The Masters degree is delivered by two or three out of four universities: Rennes1 (F), Torino (I), TUM and LMU at München (DE).

This Master aims to promote the scientific collaboration between Universities, Large Scale Facilities and Industry. Its main objective is to achieve skilled scientists in Materials Science together with an advanced knowledge in the use of Large Scale Facilities for the characterization of high tech materials.

Criteria are three successful years of full time studies spent in a national BSc course (or equivalent) in Materials Science or related areas (Physics, Chemistry, Geoscience etc…) together with a proficiency level of scientific English, e.g. TOEFL210/550, IELTS6.5, or similar. The enrolment will be limited to 45 students per year to guarantee an excellent professor/student ratio. Several important European Large Scale Facilities (ESRF and ILL (Grenoble, France), LLB Saclay, France), DESY (Hamburg, Germany) and FRM II (Munich, Germany), ELETTRA, Italy) strongly support this Master and will co-organize the summer school and will host students in the fourth semester to follow research activities.

Strongly multidisciplinary lectures in Chemistry, Physics and Material Science will be entirely given in English. Students will receive a double/multiple Master degree in Material Science, giving direct access to further PhD studies.

TWAS Fellowships for Research and Advanced Training: Natural Sciences

TWAS offers fellowships to young scientists in developing countries to enable them to spend between three and twelve months at a research institution in a developing country other than their own. The purpose of these fellowships is to enhance the research capacity of promising scientists, especially those at the beginning of their research career, helping them to foster linkages for further collaboration.

Eligibility
* The fellowships are for research and advanced training. They are offered to young scientists holding at least an MSc or equivalent degree.
* Eligible applicants for the fellowships are young scientists working in any area of natural sciences who are citizens of a developing country and are employed by a research institution in a developing country.
* There is no age limit. However, preference is given to young scientists at the beginning of their research career and those working in Least Developed Countries.
* Institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), China, are not eligible host institutions under this programme. Applicants interested in conducting a fellowships in China are required to check whether their chosen host is a CAS institute. For a complete list of CAS institutes.Applicants wishing to attend a CAS institute should apply to either the TWAS-CAS Postgraduate or the TWAS-CAS Postdoctoral Fellowship programmes.

Call for Applications 2011–Danish Development Research Assistance, Denmark

The objective of the support is to generate knowledge in order to promote the overall objective of the Danish development assistance to reduce poverty and support sustainable development. Grants will be awarded to research projects generating new knowledge relevant to the needs and strategies of the developing countries and relevant to Denmark’s development assistance. Furthermore, it is important that the research contribute to the research capacity building in developing countries.

The themes as described with each their headline should explicitly and to the greatest extent possible be addressed and accommodated in the application. The implication is that for Theme 1, the impact of the research proposed should explicitly be linked to the issue of Climate and Climate Change, while for Theme 2 the focus is on Economic Growth and for theme 3 on Fragile States and how the research proposed may contribute to an improved understanding of factors affecting peace and stability. The text following each theme provides indicative examples only.

In 2011, the following research themes are of particular interest to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs because of their relevance to development.

Applications can only be submitted by an organisation, such as a governmental institution, business enterprise or private organisation in Denmark. The main applicant must be attached to the Danish organisation, which will be responsible for the approved project.

Applications must be:

Larger strategic research programmes (> DKK 5 million) with substantive elements of capacity building and with focus on national priorities and ownership in developing countries.

In addition, a limited number of individual PhD and post-doc applications covering a single researcher can be funded. In 2011 the amount available for individual research projects will be limited to around 10 mill. DKK and applicants applying for PhD grants are recommended to provide proof of co-funding arrangements.

All larger strategic research applications will to go through a prequalification process.

Scholarship Application Deadline:
Deadline for prequalification applications for larger strategic projects will be Wednesday December 8, 2010 at 12.00 noon. The conclusions of the prequalification process will be known before the end of January 2011.
Deadline for larger strategic prequalified projects will be Friday March 18, 2011 at 12.00 noon.
Deadline for individual PhD and post-doc applications will be Friday February 11, 2011 at 12.00 noon.
