PhD Student Position within Engineering Education Research, Sweden

They are looking for a candidate (reference number 2010/164) within the area on educational methods that promote complex competences related to transformative learning. Transformative learning, including the ability to shift perspectives, is claimed to be best achieved when different perspectives are introduced in teaching and when also their underlying assumptions are challenged. This candidate will study whether case study courses and other pedagogical approaches can promote learning processes of transformative character and how such learning can be assessed.

Another position (reference number 2010/163) is within the area of mathematics education. Mathematical models influence how we think about the world, and consequently what conclusions we draw and what choices we make. But how do students, at secondary school level and university level, conceptualize the nature and role of mathematical models in science and engineering? And how can teachers help students to construct, analyze, and solve mathematical models representing complex real-world problems in science and engineering?

A third candidate (reference number 2010/165) is sought on opportunities for improved learning in relation to knowledge clusters. In connection to Chalmers’ eight areas of advance, such clusters may form around specific themes in collaboration with the public and private sectors, integrating education, research, and innovation. How can these clusters be utilized as platforms for improved education in terms of relevance of the education, both for the profession and for the desired societal change? And how can they be utilized for informing the university on future competence needs of both students and of engineers and other professionals? What other types of opportunities for improved learning emerge?

Required qualifications :

The basic qualification for admission to the doctoral programme in Engineering Education Research is a master’s degree in an area appropriate for the research task (degree on advanced level of at least 240 higher education credits). Equivalent knowledge acquired by other means will also count as qualification. Experience from earlier work within the described areas is an advantage.

Applicants from abroad who do not have English or a Scandinavian language as their mother tongue will be required to take an English language test, e.g. TOEFL 550 (paper-based)/TOEFL 213 (computer-based) before admission.

PhD in Selfassembly of Milk Proteins, Denmark

With reference to the project manager, the work of the Ph.D. fellow will consist mainly of duties in connection with research and development within selfassembly of milk proteins (alpha-lactalbumin) into stabilized nanotubes for use as a functional ingredient in the food industry.

The appointee should have qualifications within the following areas:

  • Dairy chemistry and technology
  • Protein chemistry and analysis
  • Rheology of food materials
  • Food microstructure
  • Microscopy techniques, e.g. transmission electron microscopy

Qualification requirements:

2011 Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship, USA

his award fosters research in academic librarianship by encouraging and assisting doctoral students in the field with their dissertation research.

Eligibility

The recipient of the fellowship must meet the following qualifications:

* Be an active doctoral student enrolled in an accredited degree-granting institution
* Be engaged in researching a topic related to academic librarianship
* Have completed all coursework
* Have had a dissertation proposal accepted by the institution
* A recipient of the fellowship may not receive it a second time.
* Applicant need not be an ACRL member

Criteria

Proposals will be judged primarily on merit with emphasis on the following:

* Potential significance of the research to the field of academic librarianship. (No attempt will be made to define academic librarianship, but the subject should be consistent with topics usually published in College & Research Libraries or key refereed library and information science research journals or presented at ACRL meetings.)
* Validity of the methodology and proposed methods of analysis
* Originality and creativity
* Clarity and completeness of the proposal
* Presentation of a convincing plan for completion in a reasonable amount of time
* Evidence of a continuing interest in scholarship such as a previous publication record

Awardee Obligation

Recipients of the fellowship are required to submit a 6-10 page report of the results of their research to the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) within two months of the project’s completion. A 500-word summary for possible publication in C&RL News is also due at that time.

Submissions

Qualified students who wish to be considered for the fellowship may apply by e-mailing a brief (ten pages or less double-spaced) proposal that includes the following:

* Description of the research, including significance and methodology
* Schedule for completion
* Budget and budget justification for items for which support is sought. (Must be items for which no other support is available. Examples of acceptable items are printing, computer time, fees to subjects, statistical consulting, photography, artwork, typing, and professional travel.)
* Name of dissertation advisor and committee members
* Letter from dissertation advisor endorsing the proposal
* Completed checklist confirming applicant eligibility

An up-to-date curriculum vitae should accompany the proposal. Because of limits imposed by timing considerations, applications may be made for research under way, e.g., a student who begins research in the fall may apply for support for expenses incurred from the fall until the time the award is made.
