PhD Scholarships in the Role of Epigenetics in Age-Related Immune Dysfunction and in Endocrine Disease, UK

Epigenetics is defined as inherited changes in gene expression that are not encoded in the DNA sequence. The major epigenetic mechanisms are DNA methylation, post-translational histone modifications, RNA interference and microRNAs. Unlike classical genetics the epigenetic signature is dynamic changing with age and is influenced by environmental factors such as diet, illness, smoking and alcohol consumption. The importance of epigenetics in developmental programmes and carcinogenesis has been clearly established however its role in common age-related inflammatory and infectious is still largely unknown, and therapeutic avenues remain underdeveloped.
This network, part of the University´s interdisciplinary `Healthcare Across the Disciplines´ theme, will establish a major cross-faculty initiative in epigenetics. It will examine the role of age-related epigenetic change in relation to the immune and endocrine systems. The students and supervisors within the network will have monthly meetings and will attend and present their data at their academic unit lab meeting. The students will attend the regular seminar series within their Department and will present at the annual Departmental and Medical School Research meetings and at cross faculty meetings organised by the Krebs Institute. A network of three PhD scholarships is being funded by the University for 3 years, providing a stipend at the standard Research Council rate (£13,590 in 2011-12), UK/EU fees and a research training grant of £1,000 p.a.

Cardiff Research Scholarship into Advanced Neuroimaging Methods, UK

CRANIUM’s aim is to stimulate the next phase of development of neuroimaging methodology for translational neuroscience applications in human health and disease.The hub of CRANIUM is the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC) with its human brain imaging techniques all under one roof:  Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Magnetoencephalography (MEG), Electroencophalography (EEG) and Trans-cranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS).CRANIUM addresses three themes: Integration of multiple neuroimaging modalities, Experimentally informed mathematical modelling of brain structure and function. Enhanced image quantitation The doctoral research projects will be experimentally focussed with a strong bias towards physical science methodology applied to biological systems.The creative resources of PhD students will be harnassed to understand signals from the mammalian nervous system and to develop neuroimaging methods that will be adopted by animal and human neuroscience researchers across the world. The programme will prepare postgraduates for a research career in biomedical imaging and neuroscience, with the flexibility to take on new techniques as they develop.  Beyond academic research, there is increasing demand for experts who understand the measurement techniques applied to biological systems in the biotech, pharmaceutical and healthcare industries.

Two-Year DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme for Engineering Graduates, India

Under this scheme, Engineering Graduates  who are selected for the Training School programme and who also have secured admission for MTech/ MChemEngg in select institutes and specializationsare paid stipend and tuition fee to pursue a MTech/ MChemEngg degree while retaining their employment in DAE. After successful completion of one-year course work at the institute, fellows undertake project work, which is assigned and supervised jointly by a DAE and an institute guide. On successful completion of MTech/ MChemEngg, they are posted as Scientific Officers in DAE. On joining, they are required to first undertake a four-month Orientation Course (OCDF) at the BARC Training School. The DGFS fellows
are enrolled and posted in one of the following units of DAE:
a) BARC, Mumbai b) RRCAT, Indore c) IGCAR, Kalpakkam.
Allocation of a DGFS fellow to a DAE unit is done at the beginning of the MTech/ MChemEngg programme.
Selected candidates are required to execute an agreement and a personal Indemnity Bond to serve
DAE for at least three years after completion of training. Indemnity Bond is for Rs 2,45,000 for OCES trainees and Rs 5,05,000 for DGFS fellows. No third party surety is required.

During Training: (i) Stipend and Allowances: OCES trainees as well as DGFS fellows are paid stipend of Rs 20,000 per month during the period of their training and a one-time book allowance of Rs 5,000, (ii) Boarding and Lodging in DAE/Institute Hostel/Guest House is mandatory.

On Appointment: Appointment in DAE units shall be as a Group A Gazetted Officer of the Government of India except in BHAVINI, NPCIL and UCIL which are governed by the service rules of Corporations.
