2 Postdoctoral Research Positions: Atmospheric Chemistry-Climate Interactions, UK

Applications are invited for two post-doctoral researchers to undertake numerical modelling studies of the interaction between atmospheric chemistry processes and the climate system. One position will be based in the Department of Chemistry with Professor John Pyle and will focus on aspects of modelling the chemistry of the troposphere and stratosphere. The second will be based in the Department of Applied Mathematics with Professor Peter Haynes and will focus on dynamical interactions, including stratosphere-troposphere coupling. Both post-holders will be expected to interact strongly with the existing chemistry-climate modelling group in the Department of Chemistry.

Applicants should have (or be about to receive) a PhD in atmospheric science, physical chemistry, applied mathematics, or a related subject, and should have experience with numerical modelling in a research context.

2011 Postdoctoral Training Fellowships for MB/PhD Graduates, UK: Medical, veterinary or dental

This scheme provides a unique opportunity for the most promising newly qualified MB/PhD graduates, or those who have achieved a high-quality PhD during or before starting their medical degree. It will enable successful candidates to make an early start in developing their independent research careers, by undertaking a period of postdoctoral training in the best laboratories in the UK and overseas, and can be tailored to allow them to continue their postgraduate clinical training.Fellowships are for up to four years (see ‘Eligibility’) and, depending on the duration of the fellowship, would not be expected to exceed £350 000. Fellowships provide:

a salary set by the host institution, according to age and experience
research expenses (e.g. materials and consumables, animals, small items of equipment)
travel and overseas subsistence
support to attend scientific meetings.
No funding is provided for course fees or examination fees.

Support funds for research staff or substantial equipment are not normally provided. It is expected that an appropriate laboratory(ies) will be selected and that the majority of the necessary equipment and facilities required for the proposed research be available to the candidate.Fellowships may be taken up on a part-time employment basis, where appropriate. Applicants are advised to consult their training authority when designing the clinical component of their application.

Four Postgraduate Positions in Political Science, Sweden

The doctoral candidate programme amounts to 240 credits (which is equivalent to four years of study full time). It formally ends with the doctoral candidate publicly defending his/her printed doctoral thesis.

The holder of a postgraduate position has as his/her primary obligation to successfully fulfil his/her third cycle education ending with a PhD degree. Regulations concerning appointment as a full time postgraduate student can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 5, 1-7 §§. The holder of a postgraduate position is expected to participate actively in the research and teaching environment of the Department. He/she will normally have to perform departmental duties, above all teaching, amounting to about 20 per cent of full time.
