2011 Crafoord Prize by Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Sweden: Astronomy and mathematics, biosciences, geosciences or polyarthritis research

The Crafoord Prize in astronomy and mathematics, biosciences, geosciences or polyarthritis research is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences annually according to a rotating scheme. The prize sum of SEK 4 million (approx. $590,000 CAN) makes the Crafoord one of the world´s largest scientific prizes.

Laureates are appointed by the Academy of Sciences in accordance with the same principles as in the choice of Nobel and the prize may be shared by more than one individual. The subject areas have also been selected such that they complement the Nobel Prize. The Prize is designed to honour work in fields ineligible for Nobel Prizes; it is awarded to scientists in different fields on a rotating basis every year. 2011 Ustinov College Scholarships, UK

The Ustinov College Accommodation Awards were established in 1994. The awards have three key objectives:

  • to contribute to the development of Ustinov College as a centre of excellence in postgraduate student life;
  • to attract outstanding students to Ustinov College who might not otherwise be able to afford to come to Durham.
  • to support University strategy in relation to attracting high quality postgraduate students to Durham;
  • Ustinov College awards up to 8 accommodation scholarships per academic year.  The awards are to offset the cost or part of the cost of college accommodation for a single student for up to one year of study.  The value of the award is up to a maximum of £5023 (2010-2011).  Applications for Ustinov College Scholarships (Accommodation) for the academic year 2011-2012 will open in April 2011, deadline for applications will be mid-July.

    PhD in Architecture, Building and Planning, Research Institute of Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands

    This project is part of the large Dutch Research Programme “Climate Proof Cities” in which a large number of universities and research institutes are involved. The aim of this programme is to provide the knowledge that is necessary for adapting the built environment to be able to cope with climate change.The duration of the project is four years. The project is expected to start in May 2011. The gross monthly salary increases from € 2042,- in the first year to € 2612,- in the fourth year.

    We are looking for an excellent and highly motivated candidate with an MSc degree in Building Science, Building, Civil, Mechanical or Environmental Engineering, or equivalent. Interest in modelling human behaviour, computer programming and physical processes (heat, air, moisture and pollution transfer) in the built environment is essential. Experience in human behaviour, climate adaptation modelling and computer programming, and/or experience in Building Performance Simulation, Computational Fluid Dynamics and/or Building Envelope Heat-Air-Moisture transfer modelling is a plus.
