2011 Canadian International Food Security Research Fund

IDRC is pleased to announce this 2011 call as part of the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (the “Fund”). According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.
Eligibility:The Fund is open to project teams from Canadian and developing country organizations, including academic institutions, private sector organizations, civil society organizations, and other research-based organizations. Applicant organizations will require considerable research experience to be able to lead a project of this nature.

UN organizations, the CGIAR, and Canadian federal government agencies may not apply as primary recipients, but may be included in applications by others, as third-party participants.

Any individual can be involved in a maximum of two applications to CIFSRF, but cannot be presented as principal investigator on more than one application.

SEARCA Graduate Scholarship in Agriculture 2012-2013

The Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) invites applications for its graduate scholarship(MS andPhD)in agriculture and related fields (including biologicalsciences, socialsciences, economics andstatistics, forestry and fisheries, environmental sciences, agro industrial technology and engineering,biochemistry, and development management) for School Year 2012-2013.The scholarship is open to nationals of Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, thePhilippines, Singapore,Thailand, Timor Leste, and Vietnam who are regular employees of academic or research institutions or government agencies and not older than 35 years old.

Research Capacity and Infrastructure Schemes

The Leverhulme – Royal Society Africa Award is aimed at encouraging collaborative research projects between scientists based at research institutions in Ghana and Tanzania with researchers in the UK.  In particular, new collaborations are encouraged and are looked upon favourably.  As part of a discrete collaborative research project with the UK, the scheme is also intended to assist in strengthening the research and training capacity in research institutions in Ghana and Tanzania through specific skills transfer to the African institutions.

Subjects covered: The scheme will cover all areas of basic natural science covered by the Royal Society’s remit, but applications are particularly encouraged from the five identified national research priorities in Ghana and Tanzania:

  • Agriculture (including animal health)
  • Water and sanitation
  • Basic human health research (including medicinal chemistry)
  • Biodiversity (including medicinal plants and green chemistry)
  • Energy (including biofuels)

Please note that the scheme does not cover the humanities, social sciences or clinical medical research.

Duration of funding: Three year

Countries covered: The scheme will support bilateral research collaborations between UK-based scientists and researchers in either Ghana or Tanzania.

Value: The maximum support is £50,000 per annum, covering research expenses, costs for mobility and equipment, including maintenance of existing equipment (equipment costs are capped at £10,000 per year). The maximum total amount of award is £150,000. The Royal Society will pay the UK partner institution, which will be responsible for transferring finances to Ghana or Tanzania as required.
