NSHSS Earth Ethics Doctoral Grant 2011, USA: Enhancing the sustainability of the Earth’s environment, resources, inhabitants, or ecological systems through responsible stewardship.

This scholarship is for $5,000, to encourage and reward study and the creation of new knowledge in Earth Ethics at the doctoral level. This award is intended to facilitate research or assist with the costs associated with study at the doctoral level and may be used for tuition, books, research, or other costs directly related to the completion of the thesis or dissertation. The topic must be approved by the candidate’s department or supervising faculty member before its description may be submitted for the award. The completed thesis or dissertation must remain focused on Earth Ethics. The dissertation or thesis need not be initially prepared in English, but all materials, supporting and primary, must be provided in English. Doctoral students from around the globe are encouraged to apply.

The dissertation should encompass research that provides workable solutions to enhancing the sustainability of the Earth’s environment, resources, inhabitants, or ecological systems through responsible stewardship. Eligibility: National Society of High School Scholars members enrolled in a doctoral program. NSHSS members who have joined in high school are life-time members of the organization.

PhD Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering, PhD School of Politecnico di Milano, Italy

The Doctoral Programme in Mechanical Engineering is coordinated by the ‘Dipartimento di Meccanica’ – Department of Mechanical Engineering. It enrols slightly less than 10% of the total number of PhD students of the PhD School of Politecnico di Milano. In figures, it enrols an average number of 25 students every year, many of them supported by scholarships from public institutions and private companies. Each student is assigned a tutor, who is a member of the Doctoral Board, and a research supervisor, who is a professor of the Faculty. Educational activities consist of selected courses. Advanced courses (taught in English) dedicated to doctoral students and senior graduate students bring the attendants to the frontiers of knowledge in those research sectors where the Department of Mechanical Engineering excels and is most active.
Dedicated courses on relevant topics are organized yearly by various national and international schools, and offered to our PhD students. All lecturers are prominent at international level in their respective field of expertise.
The PhD students can carry out their study and research activities within the following major research areas.

Basic requirements
The basic requirements are the following:
• Five years education at University level
• Knowledge of the English language at B2-level or higher
• Strong motivation

Scholarship Application Deadline:May 2011 – (exact date to be defined). Deadline for submission of applications. Within the deadline the applicants have to fill in and submit the online application form. Also those applicants who have not graduated at the time of the application but that expect to graduate by the end of December 2011 can submit the application at this time. If selected, their admission to the PhD programme is conditioned by successful graduation by December 2011.

Doctoral Position in Media and Communication studies, Sweden

Research in media and communication studies at Lund University focuses on the sociology of media and culture. We combine quantitative and qualitative research methods with critical social and cultural theory to understand the role of media within broader social, political, and cultural contexts. Our international research includes work on media citizenship and democracy, gender and the media, media scandals, media audiences, popular culture, news, documentary, and reality TV, media health, consumption and advertising, social participation in new media environments, and the sociality and spatiality of media in urban spaces. Our doctoral students work on areas related to social activism, celebrities, media health, and cultural sociology. We run a regular international seminar series, and are developing doctoral courses and forums with other media institutions. We invite applicants with interests in media audiences and popular culture who can make an active contribution to the international profile of the department.
