The Center offers a residential postdoctoral fellowship program for scientists and scholars from this country and abroad. Since 1954, CASBS fellowships have been awarded to scholars working in a diverse range of disciplines. These include the five core social and behavioral disciplines of anthropology, economics, political science, psychology and sociology as well as scholars from a wide range of humanistic disciplines, education, linguistics and the biological sciences.

Many activities offer Fellows significant opportunities to engage with one another (as well as with other accomplished scholars on Stanford campus):

•a seminar series in which Fellows are invited to present their work
•informal work groups that emerge during the year, which give Fellows with broadly overlapping interests a basis for sustained conversation
•public meetings of special projects in residence, which give Fellows a chance to learn more about these projects and to engage with participants on substantive issues of mutual interest
•daily lunches at the Center, which often result in one-on-one meetings between potential collaborators
•special events and recreational activities organized by the Center
•Stanford campus colloquia and seminars provided by the Psychology Department, the Clayman Institute for Gender Research, the Humanities Center, etc.

South Africa – Switzerland Research Collaboration in Science and Technology:Call for Project Proposals 2011: Public Health and Biomedicine, Bio- and Nanotechnologies

Public Health and Biomedicine, Bio- and Nanotechnologies are ground-breaking disciplines, ideally situated for replying to worldwide health needs and for the development of forward-looking industry applications. Through the use of novel research techniques they offer potential solutions for many of today’s global challenges in industry and society.

Who may apply?
In South AfricaApplicants must reside in South Africa and be employed researchers at a recognised highereducation or research institution such as a university, university of technology, national facility, museum or science council. Applications must designate the primary Swiss counterpart in collaboration with who joint research or networking is to be undertaken. The Principal Investigators will bear responsibility for the project, including its technical and administrative coordination as well as scientific and financial reporting. Applicants should be in possession of at least a Masters degree (preferably PhD) in order to apply under this programme. The application should not be submitted through an industry/business partner. All applications must be directed through the research office or the NRF Designated Authority. Only one application per applicant will be accommodated. Any incomplete application will be automatically disqualified. The industry
partner under this programme for the SA applicant must be affiliated to a registered South African company. Relevant business, registration or financials of the industry partner may be requested at any time.

In Switzerland
Applications should reflect ambitious research outlines, designed to create synergies across disciplinary borders and between the private and public sectors. Eligible proposers are Swiss citizens or permanent residents of Switzerland holding a PhD degree or more.
Applicants who may choose to involve industry in their project are requested to describe how matching funds or services from South African and Swiss partners will be generated through public or private sources during the project duration. Application submission does not guarantee funding since funding will depend on evaluation and availability of funds.

Three PhD Studentship in Political Science, Sweden

Two of the doctoral dissertations will comprise independent projects in political science written under the direction of a research supervisor.

The project Civil Society and the Enlightened Welfare Politics will comprise the framework for one of the doctoral dissertations, which will be written independently in cooperation with the project leader and the research supervisor.

Indicate in your cover letter whether or not you are interested in all three of these Ph.D. student positions.

Those awarded a position as a Ph.D. student shall above all engage themselves with their own doctoral education. A maximum of 20% of the position may involve other administrative and educational responsibilities at the Department. Employment as a post-graduate student requires that the student is or will be accepted to a program of post-graduate education, which is decided by one’s ability to successfully complete the program of studies. Departmental policy is that students receive financial support during their first year of post-graduate studies, and that they be employed as Ph.D. students during the final three years of their program. Regulations concerning post-graduate students are to be found in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, §§1-7, and in the University’s rules and guidelines.
