SAFe Think PhD and Researchers Fellowship Call: human and social sciences

The SAFe Think programme was launched in 2010 with the view of strengthening the connections between South African research institutes and their French counterparts. By assisting research partners in establishing sustainable cooperation, the French government aims at facilitating the integration of South African think tanks into French, European and francophone African scientific networks.

The 2010 edition of the programme has allowed several South African senior researchers to conduct joint projects with research institutes based in France. In view of the interest expressed in the programme by partner institutions, the French government is pleased to open applications for 2011.
The French government is offering five fellowships allowing successful applicants to undertake a joint research project of a duration of up to ten weeks in collaboration with a French research institute. Fellowships include a 2000€ monthly allowance, a roundtrip airflight ticket, visa fees and full medical and social insurance.

Requirement
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree and have experience in programme/project management coupled with a substantial publication record. Applications from researchers with a Master’s qualification, having an extensive publication record and relevant experience, will also be considered.

Given the bilateral nature of the partnership, preference will be given to South African applicants. However, all candidates meeting the requirements are encouraged to apply.

Clinical Informatics Postdoctoral Fellowships in LHNCBC, USA

The Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communication (LHNCBC) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) seeks postdoctoral fellows as well as graduate and medical students, who are interested in collaborative research within a variety of clinical informatics areas, including Capture, processing and analysis of clinical data for patient care and research applications. LHNCBC has a tradition of advancing health information systems and its world class research staff is involved in activities that define and support the research infrastructure for next generation medical information systems. This program will extend the LHNCBC training opportunities out to the NIH Clinical Center and other research sites on the NIH campus to work in patient care and clinical research settings.

PhD Fellow in Veterinary Imaging, University of Copenhagen, Denmark

The project will be concerned with the use of ultrasound to generate images for clinical and research use and with the extraction of quantitative data from these images. The fellowship is partly funded by the strategic initiative at KU-LIFE, CHANCE and will utilize chemometric analyses as part of its research methodology. Ultrasound images from an ongoing research project involving eels are available and further experiments will require further imaging by the Fellow in this species. In addition the PhD Fellow will be expected to identify suitable clinical patients and collect data form them at the Department´s Small Animal Hospital and perform subsequent analysis. The aim being to describe relevant clinical or physiological parameters. The research work will be based primarily at the Small Animal Hospital, however some of the research image collection may be done by the Fellow at an external research farm. In addition to the duties described below, the PhD fellow will be expected to contribute to the clinical and teaching activities of the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences. The project will provide opportunities to develop existing skills in general veterinary diagnostic imaging using digital radiography, CT, MRI, scintigraphy and in particular ultrasound. Training in image analysis and statistical analysis techniques will be an integral party of the fellowship. Principal supervision on the project will be provided by the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences with additional supervision provided by the CHANCE initiative.
