PhD Studentship in Aquatic Microbial Ecology and Genomics, Sweden

Aquatic microorganisms hold central roles in most biogeochemical cycles. In this PhD project we will study the roles played by bacteria and archaea in the transformation and metabolic use of quantitatively significant carbon compounds in lakes and oceans. For this purpose, we will use a combination of controlled experiments and advanced cultivation-independent methods for microscopic and sequence-based characterization of the ecology and metabolic features of aquatic microorganisms. The ability of different bacteria and archaea to use methane, chitin, proteins and other quantitatively important carbon compounds will be studied at the level of single cells.

Qualifications: Candidates should have a University degree in biology, molecular biotechnology, bioinformatics or related discipline. Basic knowledge in microbiology and proficiency in oral and written communication in English is expected. Documented experience in bioinformatics and/or laboratory work will strengthen your application. Personal motivation and interest in the subject will also be used to select candidates for the position.

2011 TIGP Summer Internship Programme in Taiwan: Chemical Biology, Molecular Biophysics, Molecular Science and Technology, Molecular,Biological Agricultural Sciences,Bioinformatics,Molecular and Cell Biology,Nano Science

The Taiwan International Graduate Program is pleased to invite applications to our 2011 Summer Internship Program (TIGP-SIP). The TIGP is a unique all-English Ph.D. program supported by Academia Sinica, Taiwan’s most prestigious research institution. In collaboration with top-ranking local research universities the TIGP would like to invite young talents from around the globe to experience Taiwan’s top-notch scientific research facilities and to jointly build up an intellectual network for people with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Over a two-months period in the summer of 2011, the TIGP is offering up to 60 internship opportunities in eight Ph.D. programs.

Launched in 2009, the TIGP-SIP is an intensive pre-doctoral research training program that prepares its participating interns with necessary knowledge and skills for future research or career development through rigorous hands-on training.

Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) Young Researchers Award

The GBIF Governing Board has established the Young Researchers Award to foster innovative research and discovery in biodiversity informatics by graduate students in master’s and doctoral programmes at universities in GBIF Voting and Associate Participant countries1.

Eligibility and Award
Graduate students in a masters or doctoral programme at a university in a GBIF Voting Participant or Associate Participant Country1 are eligible to submit a proposal to the GBIF Young Researcher Award programme. This year, the programme intends to make two awards of 4000 Euros each, one to a master’s student and one to a doctoral student.
