TEAM Programme for MSc Students, PhD Students and Postdoctorals, Poland: Bio, Information, Technology

The overall objective of the programme is to increase engagement of young scientists in research performed by the best teams and in the best laboratories in Poland. The projects may be carried out in one of the three main thematic areas: Bio, Info, Techno.

The programme is addressed to research teams’ leaders intending to engage students, PhD students or young PhDs (up to 4 years after the PhD) in the project. The students, PhD students and young PhDs must be selected in an open competition procedure that iscarried out on international level. The number of research team members selected trough such a competition should not be lower than 6.

The main evaluation criteria are the following:

* team leader’s scientific record as well as experience in implementing projects (achieved within the last 4 years),
* scientific or innovative quality of the projects, which will be realized by the selected team members.

The very important element to evaluate the projects is the planned international cooperation of the team (here the minimum guarantee of the intended future collaboration will be the letter of intent signed by the foreign partner, enclosed to the application form).

Scholarship Application Deadline:15 March 2011 and 30 September 2011.

KOLUMB Fellowship Programme for Polish Postdoctoral Applicants: Bio, Information, Technology

The stipends are awarded for a stay at one research centre, or in justified instances more than one. Stipendees who would like to extend their stay abroad may seek additional funding, on a one-time basis (for 3 months at most), but the duration of the stipend may not exceed 15 months in any event.

To be eligible to apply for a stipend, researchers must:
* hold a doctorate
* file a stipend application no later than 4 years after obtaining the doctorate, which period is extended by 2 years in the case of: men who took documented paternity leave or childrearing leave for at least 3 months, or women who gave birth to a child or adopted a child, based on the birth certificate or adoption certificate

* hold Polish citizenship, or obtained in Poland a permit to settle or a permit for long-term residence in the European Union

Scholarship Application Deadline:1 March 2011 and the second deadline this year is 15 October 2011.

PhD in Quantitative Mass Spectrometry by LC-ESI-IT-MS, IGSM, Germany

Signal strength in mass spectrometry strongly depends on the chemistry and size of analytes and can therefore not simply be used for quantification. In the field of polysaccharide derivatives, e.g. cellulose ethers, the molar composition of complex oligomeric mixtures obtained by partial depolymerization of the polymer, need to be analyzed. Accuracy of quantitative data is of high importance for pattern evaluation of these chemically modified biopolymers.

In Electrospray Ionization (ESI), surface activity and electrophoretic mobility of analytes, solvent and solvation energy, play an important role for relative ion yields of the components of a mixture. In addition, instrumental parameters as skimmer voltages and target mass influence the ion current. Coupling of the MS to Liquid chromatrography (LC) can mitigate effects of competition of analytes, and allow to optimize individual measurement conditions. Aim of the project is to study and quantify the factors of influence. Therefore, defined oligosaccharide derivatives shall be synthesized as model compounds and their behavior be studied.

The Braunschweig IGSM aims at increasing the number of women in scientific positions. Female candidates are therefore particularly encouraged to apply.
You are required to hold an excellent university degree (master’s or equivalent degree) in physics, chemistry, electrical or mechanical engineering, mathematics, information technology or related fields. Please note that the entire program is run in English, so fluency in both written and spoken English is required. Skills in German are welcome.
You may be a member of the IGSM for up to 3 years. In your first semester, you will be accepted on a probationary basis.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 31 March 2011
