The Department of Design at Goldsmiths

The Department of Design at Goldsmiths, University of London, is pleased to announce one 3-year, fully funded, PhD studentship in Design, available from October 2010 or January 2011. The successful applicant will have their fees waived and receive an annual stipend at the standard RCUK level of £13590 per year.

The student will be expected to make a strong contribution to research in the department, working with established researchers on topics close to their own. Examples of relevant research groups and interests within the department include:

  • The Interaction Research Studio : socially-oriented and speculative interaction design. Current projects focus on design for interpretation and reframing online information for specific situations.
  • The PI studio : ubiquitous computing, product innovation, and design for public spaces.
  • Technology Education Research Unit : exploring design processes, including through digital capture, in the contexts of learning, teaching, assessment and research.
  • Environmental Design : critically sensitive design interventions focused on environmental issues. Current projects focus on ecological urbanism, designing for political engagement and participation, and creative practice for climate change.
  • New Materials : the nature, attributes of and applications for new materials for design

They are looking for a truly top calibre student to receive this award. Applicants should hold, or expect to have attained, a masters degree (distinction or merit) by the time the studentship commences. We are particularly interested in applicants with significant design experience or experience in academia, with a good track record of design in professional or research contexts, and/or a track record of research and publication. As part of the studentship, the successful candidate will be expected to carry out light teaching and/or administrative duties, normally in years 2 and 3.

To Apply:
Applications should be sent by e-mail to Prof Bill Gaver, Postgraduate Convener, on w.gaver@gold.ac.uk, and should consist of a short covering letter, a research proposal (maximum 2,000 words) and a full CV, including
names of two academic referees.

Application deadline: 31 August 2010.

Interview date: week commencing 6 September 2010.
