2011 Research Position at University of Oslo in Statistics, Norway

The Department of Mathematics is part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The department has three sections: Mathematics, Mechanics, and Statistics and Insurance Mathematics. The position is affiliated with the Section for Statistics and Insurance Mathematics, which currently has 11 full-time academic positions, 3 adjunct positions, and 7 PhD students.

Much of the research at the Section for Statistics and Insurance Mathematics is organized in the research group for Statistics and Biostatistics. The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences has appointed the group as one of the top-tier research groups at the faculty. The research of the group focuses on methodological and applied problems in statistics; in particular many research projects originate in the use of statistics in biology, medicine, and technological and economic risk assessments.

2011 Research Position in Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT), India: Finite Element Approximation and Computer Implementation for Non-Linear Elliptic Singular Perturbation Problems with Engineering Applications

Applications on plain paper with complete bio-data along with self-attested photocopies of candidate’s professional certificates are invited from Indian nationals for the post of Research Associate (RA) to work in research project entitled “Finite Element Approximation and Computer Implementation for Non-Linear Elliptic Singular Perturbation Problems with Engineering Applications.” sanction order no. 25(0187)/10/EMR-II sponsored by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). The envelope should be superscribed as “Application for the post of Research Associate (RA) in the Project “Finite Element Approximation and Computer Implementation for Non-Linear Elliptic Singular Perturbation Problems with Engineering Applications.”The position is purely temporary and will be governed by the administrative rules/service conditions of Research & Consultancy Cell, MNNIT.
Eligibility: Ph.D in Mathematics or equivalent with 60% marks in M.Sc. Knowledge of
Mathematical Software’s / computer programming language is desirable. Those who have submitted PhD thesis can also apply.

Two PhD Positions in Statistics, Uppsala University, Sweden

Starting date: 1st of September 2011 or as agreed upon

The discipline of Statistics analyses and develops methods to interpret and draw scientific conclusions from data. The main research areas at the Division of Statistics are time series analysis/econometrics and structural equation modelling.

Eligible for a PhD position is the student with a Master degree, completed courses of 240 ECTS points, whereof at least 60 ECTS points on Master level, or equivalent. Further, the specific entry requirement is 90 ECTS points in statistics or equivalent. Solid background in mathematics and in applied science is considered a merit.

The graduate study normally comprises four years of full-time studies. Studies include 105 ECTS of courses and a dissertation of 135 ECTS. The thesis (or the articles that it consists of) should be publishable in international scientific journals. It should be defended on a seminar with an external discussant and a grading committee.
