Howard Hughes Medical Institute Medical Student Research Fellowship

The Medical Research Fellows Program (“Med Fellows Program”) supports a year of full-time biomedical research training for medical, dental, and veterinary students. This includes joint initiatives with the Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) for students conducting research in ophthalmology, particularly inherited retinal degenerative diseases, and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) for veterinary students.

A new initiative, the Medical Research Fellows Program at Janelia Farm, offers students with an interest in neuronal networking and/or imaging an intense year-long research training experience, living and working at the HHMI Janelia Farm Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia in the Washington, D.C., area. Students must comply with specific eligibility and application requirements.

The application process is the same for students eligible for HHMI-FFB, and HHMI-BWF fellowships. There is no separate designation required in the online application. HHMI will identify applicants for consideration for these awards.

Application to the Medical Research Fellows Program at Janelia Farm is a two-step process that requires a prescreening portion of the application to be submitted by November 1. Refer to the Program Information PDF for details.

Eligibility
Applicants must be enrolled in a medical, dental, or veterinary school in the United States. The fellowship research may be conducted at any academic or nonprofit institution in the United States, except the National Institutes of Health. Research may be conducted abroad if the fellow’s mentor is affiliated with a U.S. institution.

Fellows must be able to start their research year between June 1, 2011 and September 1, 2011. Students must be authorized to work in the United States by the award acceptance deadline of April 1, 2011, either as a U.S. citizen, or under an appropriate visa.

The Medical Research Fellows Program at Janelia Farm requires that students live and work at the Janelia Farm Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia.

Support Provided
For the 2011 competition: An annual stipend of $28,000, an annual fellow’s allowance of $5,500 for health insurance, education-related expenses, and roundtrip relocation expenses up to $1,500, (for those working at a fellowship institution other than their school); and an annual research allowance of $5,500 for research enrichment programs, conference travel, some research-related supplies, and books. HHMI-FFB and HHMI-BWF Fellows will receive the same level of funding, and will have all the obligations and privileges of other fellows participating in the Medical Research Fellows Program.

For the Medical Research Fellows Program at Janelia Farm: An annual salary of $28,000, health insurance, furnished on-campus housing, $5,500 allowance for books, conference travel, and related courses, roundtrip relocation expense reimbursement (up to $1,500).

Loan Deferment
HHMI can complete loan deferment forms for Fellows so that they are able to defer their loans during their HHMI fellowship year.

Health Administration: Medical Professionals of Tomorrow Scholarship

Requirements

  • You must be enrolled in an accredited two or four-year school
  • You must be enrolled as a full-time student
  • You must be enrolled in an educational program that is related to the medical field
  • You must be a legal resident of the United States
  • You must complete the application and submit your response to the essay question by July 31, 2011
  • Your response to the essay question should be at least 500 words in length.
