Systems Biology PhD Studentship in Designing Metabolism at University of Exeter, UK

Biological systems are inherently complex and are a result of evolution. Understanding these systems requires us to draw on mathematical modelling, systems dynamics analysis and in silico simulations of agent-based model systems. In this project, we will utilise these approaches to understand the cellular metabolic networks of bacteria and to design them de novo.
Nature has an immense capacity to produce useful metabolites from simple building blocks. Even “simple” single celled organisms can use a handful of basic molecules, available to them in the environment, to make an array of diverse compounds. These are then utilised as energy source, molecular signals or even as toxins. Humans use such compounds in their diet, as medicines or in industrial applications. As such, it is of immediate value to understand the structure and dynamics of metabolic networks responsible for the production of diverse metabolites. Our analysis will combine approaches from graph theory, control theory and evolutionary biology to achieve such an understanding. We will then use the insight to manipulate existing metabolic networks in order to increase yield of specific products, or to design entirely novel networks.

Three-Year Funded Doctoral Studentships: Impacts of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals on Fish Health, UK

It is now well established that a very wide range of chemicals, spanning pesticides, to plasticizers and medicines, that are discharged into the environment can alter the hormone systems of wildlife (and humans) impacting on their health. In wild fish populations exposure to some of these chemicals has been proven to alter sexual development and breeding capability. The potential health risks associated with exposure to so-called endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) is a major international concern, yet very little is known on the impacts of exposures to their mixtures in the aquatic environment. This studentship will address a major knowledge gap on the physiological impacts and health implications of exposure to selected EDCs, pharmaceuticals and their mixtures in fish. The work will involve working with transgenic fish created to respond to selected types of endocrine disrupting pollutants. The student will get training in a wide variety of modern cellular and molecular techniques, and integrated whole animal physiology and will benefit from working within large, vibrant and interdisciplinary research team.

Clinical Informatics Postdoctoral Fellowships in LHNCBC, USA

The Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communication (LHNCBC) at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) seeks postdoctoral fellows as well as graduate and medical students, who are interested in collaborative research within a variety of clinical informatics areas, including Capture, processing and analysis of clinical data for patient care and research applications. LHNCBC has a tradition of advancing health information systems and its world class research staff is involved in activities that define and support the research infrastructure for next generation medical information systems. This program will extend the LHNCBC training opportunities out to the NIH Clinical Center and other research sites on the NIH campus to work in patient care and clinical research settings.
