Three PhD Studentship in Political Science, Sweden

Two of the doctoral dissertations will comprise independent projects in political science written under the direction of a research supervisor.

The project Civil Society and the Enlightened Welfare Politics will comprise the framework for one of the doctoral dissertations, which will be written independently in cooperation with the project leader and the research supervisor.

Indicate in your cover letter whether or not you are interested in all three of these Ph.D. student positions.

Those awarded a position as a Ph.D. student shall above all engage themselves with their own doctoral education. A maximum of 20% of the position may involve other administrative and educational responsibilities at the Department. Employment as a post-graduate student requires that the student is or will be accepted to a program of post-graduate education, which is decided by one’s ability to successfully complete the program of studies. Departmental policy is that students receive financial support during their first year of post-graduate studies, and that they be employed as Ph.D. students during the final three years of their program. Regulations concerning post-graduate students are to be found in the Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 5, §§1-7, and in the University’s rules and guidelines.

Mary Kelly Ad Astra Research Scholarship in Society and the Environment, UK

Proposals may relate to social factors that are seen to contribute to creating environmental problems, the social consequences of such problems and strategies for addressing such problems. The specific issues to which such research could be addressed include the following: environmentalism as a social movement; perceptions of environmental problems and the inequitable social distribution of environmental hazards; environmental justice and social inequality; paradigms of environment and society; environmental knowledge, discourse and policy; environmental conflict, public values and the environment, environmental citizenship. Research Study The College of Human Sciences, UCD has funded a 3-year ad Astra Research Scholarship for a Ph.D. research proposals relating to the study of the relationship between society and the environment. The successful candidate, with support from a supervisor, would be expected to identify a major topic of interest within this area.
Ad Astra Scholarship: The scholarship is valued at €16,000 per annum. This is comprised of €12,000 as a tax-free scholarship, and €4,000 as remuneration for contributions to the undergraduate teaching programme (not greater than 234 hours per annum). Successful applicants who do not qualify for any external fee support will in addition be supported by a UCD Grant to cover fees. All students are obliged to pay the Student Centre Levy. Eligibility: Applicants must have a first or upper second class honours primary degree and/or master’s degree, or the equivalent, in Sociology or a related discipline and be qualified for direct admission to a Ph.D. programme. In addition to academic excellence, cognisance will be taken of relevant previous professional experience and training.

2011 Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research, University of Virginia School of Medicine, USA

The University of Virginia School of Medicine offers summer research internship opportunities to qualified college undergraduates considering a career in biomedical research. The program targets, but is not limited to, racially and ethnically diverse students in their junior and senior years. Interns receive $4,412 toward summer expenses. In addition, housing and travel to and from Charlottesville are provided.

Our inaugural program was held in the summer of 1992. The program has recently hosted approximately 35 students each year.The Summer Research Internship Program provides an outstanding environment to learn first hand about a career in biomedical research. Many of our former SRIP participants have matriculated into M.D./Ph.D. and Ph.D. programs, including at UVa.
