PhD | Scholarship for Nigerians and Africans - Part 133

Computer Science Scholarship

Candidates should have experience in one or more of the following areas: image processing, scientific visualization, pattern recognition

Study Subject: Computer Science
Employer: University of Groningen

Level: PhD

Scholarship Description: In many scientific areas one increasingly makes use of images where each pixel holds a matrix or tensor value. This project addresses the development of a solid mathematical and algorithmic framework for connectivity-based morphological filtering and visualization of tensor images. The goal is to extend (hyper)connected, adaptive and multiscale morphological filters to tensor images. Tensor images contain a wealth of information which allows adaptive directional steering of morphological image operators. As the image data sets can grow to very large sizes, the development of efficient algorithms for the new filters is an important part of the project. A prime application area is medical imaging of the brain, where diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging enables the in-vivo exploration of nerve fiber bundles. We will collaborate with neuroscience researchers to explore the potential of the new morphological filters for brain connectivity analysis.

Function

  • experience in one or more of the following areas: image processing, scientific visualization, pattern recognition
  • programming experience in Matlab and C/C++/Java
  • you are expected to have an excellent academic record (as shown by a list of examination marks) and be curious, creative and ambitious
  • good command of the English language (oral and written).

Scholarship Description: The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of State sponsors the International Fulbright Science & Technology Award for Outstanding Foreign Students (Fulbright S&T) to provide exceptional foreign students with an opportunity to pursue Ph.D. study at top U.S. universities.

Fulbright S&T is designed to be the most prestigious international scholarship in science and technology and to demonstrate the United States’ commitment to welcoming top-notch future researchers and leaders to pursue serious scientific study and research at U.S. institutions.

Eligibility

Applicants must have completed a bachelor’s degree (comparable to a U.S. bachelor’s degree) on or before August 2012 and cannot reside in the U.S. at the time of application to the program. It is highly recommended that the applicant have received his/her bachelor’s degree in the same or a related field for which he/she plans to pursue Ph.D. study. Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency with a recent TOEFL score (or equivalent) of 580 or higher

Grantees receive three years of funding from ECA followed by support from their U.S.host institution until the completion of Ph.D. programs.
Applications for the competition will be accepted starting February 1, 2011.

PhD scholarship at the Department of Forest and Landscape Ecology, Faculty of Life

PhD scholarship at the Department of Forest and Landscape Ecology, Faculty of Life

Study Subject: Forest and Landscape Ecology
Employer:University of Copenhagen

Level:PhD

Scholarship Description:The primary aim of the Ph.D. project is to unravel the influence of nitrogen availability on some aspects of soil C dynamics. The second and broader aim is to evaluate the potential C sequestration in Nordic forest soils due to elevated N deposition or changed forest management. The PhD will use a combination of (i) large observational databases of soil carbon content in forests, (ii) well described long-term forest managements experiments, and (iii) mathematical simulation models.
The results will be used to advice the forestry sector on best management practices and strategies for protection of and/or increasing the soils carbon sink. The results will be of relevance for future post-Kyoto climate change mitigation and adaptation agreements. The work is linked to a Nordic research network “Forest Soil C sink” funded by NordForsk and the Danish project C-For-Soil funded by the Villum Kann Rasmussen Foundation. Shorter and longer stays at Nordic partner institutions are expected. The project involves collaboration with research partners from the Nordic countries.
