Studentship for Master of Philosophy in Epidemiology or PhD in Public Health, UK

1 year MPhil courses in Epidemiology or Public Health

3 year PhD programme in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care

1+3 year MPhil course and PhD programme in Department of Public Health and Primary Care

Internationally recognised training programmes based in the UK’s highest RAE rated 5* Epidemiology and Public Health department

MPhil in Epidemiology or Public Health

A number of MRC studentships are available to support eligible UK/EU nationals* who wish to undertake either one year Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Epidemiology or Public Health for the 2011-2012 academic year. The MPhil in Epidemiology course aims to provide students with advanced knowledge and understanding of epidemiological principles and procedures and their application to health, including advanced training in critical appraisal, statistical analysis of epidemiological data and study design. The MPhil in Public Health aims to provide students with the necessary theoretical knowledge, which when combined with appropriate practical experience, can serve as a foundation for a career as a public health professional in either a service or an academic setting.

The courses are open to medical and non-medical graduates, particularly those with a background in biomedical and quantitative sciences. Applicants should have at least a 2.1 Honours Bachelors Degree in a related field (or equivalent). Applications from individuals who wish to continue to a PhD in Epidemiology or Public health are particularly welcome (see below). Financial support may cover tuition and college fees and a generous allowance expected to be in the region of £14500 per year for living costs.

PhD programme in the Department of Public Health and Primary Care

MRC studentships are available to support eligible UK/EU nationals* who wish to undertake a PhD programme of research developed in conjunction with a supervisor. PhD projects will be based on the research aims of the Department of Public Health and Primary care. All PhD applicants are encouraged to identify a potential supervisor before applying. A list of potential supervisors, and the research interests of their groups, can be found at www.phpc.cam.ac.uk/grad/phd/SupervisorsList2011-13%20MASTER.pdf.

Applicants who have obtained a Masters or equivalent in Epidemiology, Biostatistics or Public Health and have an excellent first degree (2:1 or higher) will be considered for the 3-year PhD programme. Students without a Masters or equivalent are encouraged to apply for a 1+3 PhD programme and will first complete a relevant taught MPhil in Epidemiology or Public Health and then follow the PhD programme.

PhD Position in Theoretical Chemistry, Aarhus University, Denmark

At this time (2011) there is a concrete opening for a phd position in the context of a Marie-Curie network associated with COMI (Center for Oxygen Microscopy and Imaging). The general problem to be addressed is development and application of theoretical/computational methods aimed at describing two-photon absorption.

Successful candidates are expected to have a strong background in Chemistry, Physics, Nano-science or similar, and have the ability and willingness to work with theory meaning both the basic equations, their realization in modern theories for electronic or nuclear degrees of freedom, programming and scientific computation.

It is important that the applicant can verify qualifications with respect to handling mathematical theories. Experience with running standard programs is partially assumed and definitely positive, but, however competent, is not enough.

Keywords, some of which should be strong points for the candidate includes: Theory, programming, Quantum Mechanics, ab initio electronic structure theory, vibrational structure theory, solvent effects, excited electronic states, photochemistry, QM/MM or fragmentation methods, coupled cluster theory, molecular quantum dynamics, C++, Scientific Computing, time-dependent quantum mechanics, response theory and molecular properties, anharmonic vibrational states, one- and two-photon absorption, photo-sensitizers.

Scholarship Application Deadline:before March 25 2011.
