Irish Government Scholarships in Science, Engineering and Technology

The Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET) ‘EMBARK’ Initiative and the Enterprise Partnership Scheme (EPS) offer opportunities for suitably qualified individuals to pursue a postgraduate degree by research. The Scheme supports basic research in the broad areas of Science, Engineering and Technology.
Scholarships are awarded only to those who will engage full-time in research during the period of the award.
While a majority of postgraduate Scholarships awarded by the Council are offered to European Union (EU) citizens, or to those who are ordinarily resident within a member state of the EU, a proportion of awards are also offered to exceptional candidates who are ordinarily resident in non EU member states.

Eligibility
IRCSET’s schemes support basic research in the broad areas of Science, Engineering and Technology. Research which is deemed not to fall within this remit is not eligible for funding.
Under this scheme IRCSET offers opportunities for suitably qualified individuals to pursue a postgraduate degree by research in a recognised third-level institution.
The IRCSET postgraduate competition does not accept applications from:
a. Those currently registered as Ph.D. candidates
b. Those currently registered for a Masters degree (by research) with the exception of:
i. Individuals in the Institute of Technology (IOT) sector in receipt of Strand 1 funding wishing to transfer to the Ph.D. register (in this case, IRCSET will support these individuals for up to a maximum of 2 years i.e. total postgraduate funded research including strand 1 funding cannot exceed 3 years)
ii. Individuals registered for a Masters degree (by research) intending to complete and submit for this award and begin a significantly new research proposal to Ph.D. level

The Sainsbury Scholarship in Painting and Sculpture, The British School at Rome

prestigious awards for young painters and sculptors of outstanding promise
• one year’s residence at the British School at Rome(October 2011–September 2012)
• use of a spacious and well-lit studio
• full board and lodging plus an allowance (a grant of £500 per month; plus a travel grant of £1,200)
• membership of a vibrant residential community of artists and researchers

You Will Be
• a promising and ambitious painter or sculptor
• a graduate in Fine Art (or expect to have graduated before1 October 2011)
• under 30 years of age on 1 October 2011
• a British national or have been working professionally or studying at postgraduate level for at least the last five years in the UK (i.e. since December 2005)
• able to show the importance of a residency in Rome for your practice
• able to submit a portfolio of recent drawings and examples of either paintings or sculptures
• keen to share the benefits of a residential community

Sawyer Postdoctoral Scholar, University of Chicago: Humanities

The Sawyer Seminar on “Around 1948: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Global Transformation” at the University of Chicago invites applications for a residential Postdoctoral Scholar position at the Franke Institute for the Humanities for the academic year 2011-12. For fullest consideration, complete application materials are due by Tuesday, March 1. This research position carries a salary of $50,000 per year. The Postdoctoral Scholar organizes and leads the bi-weekly workshop and may offer a one-quarter research seminar in his/her area of expertise in the relevant department. Applicants must have filed their Ph.D. between 7/1/06 and 7/1/11, and may not hold any other appointment during the period of the Sawyer Scholar position. Application includes a brief statement detailing research goals and relation to the agenda of the Sawyer Seminar (500-1000 words); a current writing sample of up to 35 pages; and a CV, including names & contact information of three references.
