PhD Scholarship on Nordic Historiography beyond Methodological Nationalism, Denmark

Funded by the Joint Committee for Nordic Research Councils for the Humanities and the Social Sciences (NOS-HS) hosted by the University of Tampere, Finland .The successful applicant will define his/her own research project within the area of Nordic historiography after 1850 applying a transnational/comparative perspective. He/she is expected to be enrolled at the Graduate School of the Faculty of Humanities in Copenhagen from 1 September 2011. The PhD scholarship is a three-year position.

Research proposals should explore Nordic norms, standards and practices of academic knowledge production in the field of history. Furthermore, they should focus on a) the role of Nordic networks in the construction of history, and/or b) the role of history and historians in the construction of ‘Norden’ as a historical region.

Postdoctoral Positions in Social Research on Alcohol and Drugs, Stockholm University, Sweden

The position is announced within the Centre of Excellence programme Exclusion and inclusion in the late welfare state: the case of alcohol and drugs. The aim of the research programme is to study ongoing changes in the area of alcohol and drugs in contemporary Sweden using a broad social science perspective. The programme includes three interrelated themes: (1) consumption: problems and norms, (2) alcohol and drug policy and its implications and (3) addiction and dependence: societal reactions, treatment and recovery processes. To pursue advanced research within one or several programme themes, to collaborate with other researchers in the programme and to apply for funding for new research projects within the programme.
Eligibility: PhD in a subject relevant to the research programme and theoretical as well as methodological skills of importance to the present research tasks. Previous experience of social alcohol and drug research is a requirement and a documented ability to formulate research projects that generate research support is considered an additional qualification.
To be attached is a copy of the PhD certificate and other certificates the applicant wishes to refer to as well as a CV and publication list. A short summary (1-2 pages) of the applicant’s research activities of specific relevance to the position should also be enclosed. A somewhat longer (5-10 pages) description of the research she/he plans to conduct and how it relates to one or more of the research themes within the programme should also be attached. In addition to specifying aims and methods, it should be clear from the description how the research is related to previous research in this area and how it is relevant to the research programme in question.

2011 AXA PhD Fellowships, King’s College London, UK: Finance and Economics, Science, Technology, Social sciences

Applicants must have completed a Masters degree before they commence their PhD. There is no age restriction. The AXA Research Fund is seeking to provide support to  Students who wish to undertake a Ph.D. in a member state of the European Union or in one of the associated countries according to the 7th EU Framework Programme (FP7)1. In such cases, the Fund does not impose any conditions regarding the nationality of the applicant or the country of the laboratory where the master was undertaken. – Students who are citizens of one of the member states of the European Union or one of the associated countries according to the FP71, and who have obtained their master in one of these same countries. In such cases, the Fund does not impose any conditions regarding the country of the Ph.D.’s host laboratory.
The selection criteria are as follows:
1. The applicant’s academic excellence, judged on the high standard of his or her master and the quality of previous course work.
2. The originality of the Ph.D. project, its feasibility (access to the resources, etc.) and the impact of its potential outcomes.
3. The international scope of the host research laboratory.
Students who would like to be considered for the AXA PhD Fellowship are asked to discuss this with their supervisor/Department. It will be the responsibility of the academic Departments/Schools to nominate a limited number or their chosen candidates to the Graduate School for selection.
