2011 CSC Distance Learning Scholarships, UK

The following UK institutions are currently recruiting candidates who wish to be considered for CSC scholarships to study by distance learning for one of the degree programmes listed below.  Prospective candidates must be citizens of, and live and work in, a developing Commonwealth country.  Full details of these courses must be obtained from the institution itself. In June 2011, the Commission will be inviting all UK higher education institutions to submit an Expression of Interest in receiving Commonewealth Distance Learning Scholarships on behalf of any distance learning courses offered either directly, or in partnership with an overseas institution. The Scholarships cover the overseas tuition fees at the Masters degree level and are open to candidates who are citizens of a developing Commonwealth country.
The Commission expects all Expressions to be submitted with the approval of an institution and therefore they should be submitted through an appointed person in the first instance.   If the Academic Department of the University is not registered with the EAS, it is necessary to click on Apply to be a Nominating Agency; otherwise, the appointed person can start completing the form by clicking on Nomination, Advice and Admin Portal . Decisions on which proposals will be supported will be taken in January 2012; thereafter institutions will conduct a recruitment exercise with the selection of candidates taking place in July 2012 for September/October 2012 take up. All Expressions of Interest should be completed with reference to the 2011 Distance Learning Scholarships prospectus that will be available here in due course

2011 APARC/Takahashi Predoctoral Fellowship, Stanford University, USA: Economics, History, Law, Political Science and Sociology

The Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center in the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies announces its 2010-2011 Shorenstein APARC/Takahashi Predoctoral Fellowship. The fellowship supports predoctoral students working within a broad range of topics related to the political economy of contemporary East Asia. Fellows whose main focus is Japan are called Takahashi Fellows, in honor of the Takahashi family, whose generous gift has made this fellowship possible. Fellows studying other regions are called Shorenstein APARC Fellows.Fellowships are available to Stanford University Ph.D. candidates who have completed all fieldwork and made substantial progress toward the completion of writing their dissertation. A minimum of three quarters of residence and participation in center activities is required. Shorenstein APARC invites applications from a broad range of disciplines, including economics, history, law, political science, and sociology.Shorenstein APARC offers a stipend of $25,050 over nine academic months, plus Stanford’s Terminal Graduate Registration (TGR) fee for three quarters. Each fellow also receives cubicle space at Shorenstein APARC.

Applicants should send the following materials to the fellowship coordinator:CV ,Description of dissertation. Please attach a detailed dissertation prospectus. The description should be clear and concise, especially to readers outside your discipline, and should not exceed five double-spaced or three single-spaced typewritten pages. Do not include the full dissertation.Copy of transcripts. Transcripts should cover all graduate work, including evidence of work recently completed.Two letters of recommendation from faculty or advisors, sent directly to Shorenstein APARC.
Fellowship Application Waiver FormsApplicants must provide a copy of the Fellowship Application Waiver Form to each person asked to write a letter of recommendation. The waiver form contains information pertaining to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. Applicants must indicate by signature whether or not they waive the right to inspect the completed recommendation. Letters of recommendation will not be considered unless the signed waiver form accompanies.

2011 George P.Shultz Fellowship in Canadian Studies, Stanford University, USA

The Canadian Studies Committee is pleased to announce the availability of funds, in honor of George P. Shultz, to support research-related activities of graduate and undergraduate students specializing in Canadian Studies. The program is intended to fill in the gaps between the availability of university and external funding for student research of Canada and the Canada-U.S. relationship in all facets, at all educational levels, and in all disciplines.Some topics that can be considered highly relevant to the Canada-U.S. relations include smart and secure borders; North American economic competitiveness; regulatory cooperation; Canada-U.S. trade and investment partnership; energy security and sustainability; environmental sustainability; emergency planning and management; Canada-U.S. security and defense cooperation; global health policy; and changing demographics in North America. The program also encourages projects that include collaboration with researchers at Canadian institutions.

Awards will be made on a competitive basis primarily to students who are in one of the following categories:
* preparing dissertation or thesis proposals;
* undertaking field research and requiring supplemental assistance;
* writing up the results of research work.
Research-related expenses that can be funded include tuition, travel, and/or reasonable living expenses. No funds are available to cover travel or maintenance costs for dependents and spouses.
