5 PhD Studentships on ReCOS Project in Linguistics, UK

Applications are invited for five PhD studentships covering the period 1 October 2011 to 30 September 2014, working under the general supervision of Professor Ian Roberts in the Faculty of Modern and Medieval Languages (although each student will in fact be assigned a four-member PhD committee). This award has become available as a result of an ERC Advanced Grant “Rethinking Comparative Syntax”. Successful applicants for these awards are expected to begin PhD study on 1 October 2011 and will receive a student stipend sufficient to meet the fees and maintenance requirements.

Applicants should have completed a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Linguistics, with a specialisation in Syntax and expect to attain or have attained a mark of distinction. Demonstrable interest in one or more specific topics in comparative syntactic research over and above what is set out in the research proposal, and/or a good knowledge of some language(s) other than English, as well as excellent writing skills in English, are desirable. Eligible candidates must submit an advanced proposal of research relevant to the “Rethinking Comparative Syntax” project, in particular, in relation to that project, they should indicate which of the five main empirical areas of research described there they would prefer to carry out doctoral work on.

2011 Jae My Postgraduate Scholarship in Korean Studies, University of Sydney, Australia

In order to promote and encourage research on Korean Studies, the Jae My Holdings Pty Ltd has established the Jae My Postgraduate Scholarship in Korean Studies at the University of Sydney. The Scholarship will provide 3 years of support for a full-time PhD student doing research on a topic in the humanities and social sciences in Korean Studies.Applicants should have an excellent honours degree or MA in Korean Studies (or equivalent). Those awarded a scholarship must enrol as full-time PhD students, and pursue research in the Department of Korean Studies within the School of Languages and Cultures, Faculty of Arts at the University.

The scholarship stipend is $20,000 per year (tax exempt). The period of tenure is up to three years. Extension of the scholarship is not permitted. The Scholarship does not cover tuition fees, so international students will need to find other sources to fund their tuition.

2011 Fellowship Programme, Vera List Center for Art and Politics, USA

The Vera List Center invites applications for 2011-2013 fellowships. Two fellowships will be awarded, each spanning ten months and tied to the Vera List Center’s focus theme for 2011-2013.
The center’s programs evolve around focus themes of particular urgency and broad resonance. In the face of virtual realities, social media and disembodied existences, the center in 2011-2013 will examine the nature of our material world under the heading of “thingness.” It will focus on the material conditions of our lives, and call for a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between objects and people that may provoke more responsible, ethical and ecologically sound politics. The Vera List Center Fellows contribute to the intellectual foundation of the center, and through their fellowship projects advance the exploration of the focus theme.
