Kovacik Scholarships in Geography, University of South Carolina, USA

Kovacik Geography Grants are named in honor of Dr. Charles F. Kovacik, the second coordinator of the South Carolina Geographic Alliance. Dr. Kovacik was instrumental in the growth of geography education in South Carolina. Nine grants have been made to South Carolina teachers since 2006.South Carolina teachers are among our best partners to increase and promote K-12 geographic literacy. These grants are meant to support their geography instruction when traditional funding options are unavailable. Proposed work should directly focus on improving instruction through the development of new curriculum materials or the acquisition of essential classroom materials and equipment. Ineligible expenses include: administrative overhead;air travel; scholarship or travel fellowships; teacher stipends; meals; SCGA products; and professional meeting fees or dues. Applications that address the geographic literacy needs of rural South Carolina and those that incorporate geospatial technologies (GIS, GPS, Remote Sensing, Internet) are especially welcome.
Eligibility: Kovacik Geography Grants are given directly to schools to promote and increase geographic literacy in the classroom and school. Grant applications are accepted from any current teacher or administrator in an accredited K-12 school within South Carolina.

Elisabeth Croll Scholarship for MPhil/PhD Fieldwork in China

The Elisabeth Croll Scholarship for fieldwork in China has been created to honour the memory of Elisabeth Croll (1944-2007), vice principal of SOAS and Professor of Chinese Anthropology. The scholarship offers a current MPhil/PhD student at SOAS £1000 towards the cost of fieldwork in China (Mainland China & Taiwan).
All candidates will be notified by e-mail regarding the outcome of their application. The successful candidate will also be notified in writing. Selection will take place in May and candidates should hear of the results by the end of June. If you have not had a response to your application by the end of June, please contact the Scholarships Officer.
Any student accepting an Elisabeth Croll Scholarship for fieldwork in China must be enrolled (i.e. full-time, part-time or study leave status) for the academic year in which he/she applies and for the academic year in which his/her Award is taken. Students on Continuation (Writing-up) are not eligible for these awards.

The Elisabeth Croll Scholarship for fieldwork in China does not normally consider retrospective applications therefore students are advised to apply in good time before leaving for fieldwork.On completion of the fieldwork, the student must submit a 1000-word report, signed by the supervisor, to the Scholarships Officer within one month of returning to the UK or within one month of the end of the fieldwork, whichever is sooner.

PhD Student Position in Medical Science in Research Group Molecular Tools, Sweden: medical and clinical genetics, bioinformatics, immunology, pathology, tumour biology, vascular biology

The department of immunology, genetics and pathology at Uppsala University (http://www.igp.uu.se) has a broad research profile, with several strong research groups in different fields of science, e.g. medical and clinical genetics, bioinformatics, immunology, pathology, tumour biology, vascular biology and method development. The department was founded to promote a closer collaboration between clinical and pre-clinical research and part of the activity is integrated with the clinics of genetics and pathology-cytology at the University Hospital, Uppsala. Rudbeck Laboratory has access to state-of-the-art technologies, with core facilities for cell analysis, confocal microscopy, DNA-sequencing and genotyping.

We look for you who want to study for a PhD degree in the field of molecular medicine. The main project will be to investigate if measurements of protein activity status provide advantages for cancer diagnostics (leukemia and circulating tumour cells). Protein activity is determined as protein interactions and post-translational modifications, using flow cytometry and microscopy. The work will also consist of development of new methods in molecular biology.

The successful candidate will devote most of the time towards his/her research level education. Other service activities within the department, e.g. education and administrative work can be included within the framework of the employment (maximum 20%).

Qualifications: The applicant should have an academic degree, e.g. MSc Pharm, or MSc Molecular Biology, or similar. Experience from experimental research, flow cytometry, immunostaining and PLA are considered as additional qualifications. Documented skills in oral and written English are required.
