2011- 2012 PhD Studentships in Law at Kent Law School, UK

Kent Law School (KLS) invites applications for full time research studentships leading to the degree of PhD commencing in September 2011. Candidates will initially register for a full time MPhil research degree at the University of Kent at Canterbury. One of these studentships will be awarded specifically for research in the area of International Law and, although the recipient will be part of the Canterbury campus postgraduate community, the associated teaching responsibilities will take place at the University’s Medway campus. The funding will be available for one year in the first instance, extended (for registered students only) for a second year providing verifiable progress has been made (in teaching and research), and extended for a third year providing the candidate has upgraded from MPhil to PhD.
The successful applicants for the studentships will receive a maintenance grant equivalent to that offered by ESRC (£13,590 in 2010/11) and tuition fees paid at the home/EU rate (£3,950 in 2010/2011).Those awarded a studentship will normally be expected to teach a maximum of four hours per week in term time on an undergraduate English law module, at the direction of the Head of Department.  Some bursaries (for example, reducing overseas fee to home fee rate) may also be available.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 15 April 2011

PhD Studentship in Ocean Biogeochemistry, MPI-M, Germany

The applicant will be part of the Research Group Ocean Biogeochemistry in the Department The Ocean in the Earth System. The research will focus on reconstructing the ocean carbon cycle and its interactions with climate during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum. The main tool will be the existing Earth system model of the MPI-M, which includes the ocean biogeochemistry model HAMOCC. One of the objectives of the project will be to improve our understanding of the PETM and its potential to serve as an analogue of the future climate perturbations due to anthropogenic CO2 emissions.

Requirements: We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a M.Sc. or diploma in Geosciences, Oceanography, Environmental Sciences, Physics or a related field. Experience, or a strong interest in biogeochemistry and modeling is of advantage. Good programming skills (FORTRAN on Unix platforms) are desirable, since the applicant will use facilities of the high performance computing centre. The working language is English. The MPI-M encourages doctoral students to participate in the International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modeling.

Scholarship Application Deadline: before 15th of March 2011

PhD Studentship in Immunobiology of Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Skeletal Tissue Engineering, Newcastle University, UK

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a significant healthcare burden and preventing or slowing its onset would alleviate considerable patient disability and suffering.  The use of cell therapies offers an exciting opportunity to treat early stage osteochondral lesions that otherwise would go on to initiate osteoarthritic changes.  One strategy is to use the patients own cells alone or in conjunction with a biomaterial scaffold to rebuild the diseased tissue.  As part of the Arthritis Research UK Tissue Engineering Centre our research is focused on understanding the immunophenotype of adult mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and chondrocytes or osteoblasts derived from this source. Approaches to the isolation of MSCs will be investigated and processes implemented to current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) ensuring their translation to clinical use.  The immunobiology of MSCs and chondrocytes or osteoblasts differentiated in culture will be investigated by a number of approaches including flow cytometry.
Eligibility:The award covers University fees at the UK/EU rate and a stipend matched to the minimum Research Council recommended stipend, £13,590 (2010/11).  Candidates from outside UK/EU may apply but tuition fees will only be paid at the UK/EU rate.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 25 March 2011
