Predoctoral Researcher Position at the Department of Plant Biotechnology and Genetics, Ghent University, Belgium

Interdisciplinary research project in the field of plant biology and biochemistry, using proteomics and functional genomics approaches to understand the function of plant proteases involved in cell death mechanisms regulating growth and development of plants.

University of Leeds, Research Scholarship in Business Management 2011 in UK

Up to 18 University Research Scholarships are available for UK and EU students for Session 2011-2012 for study in any Faculty at the University of Leeds.  Up to 2 awards are available in each Faculty.

  • Applicants MUST first submit a research degree study application form and be in receipt of a University BANNER ID Number(Student ID Number) to be eligible for a University Research Scholarship.  Applications without a valid University ID Number will be rejected.  To apply for a place on a research degree programme, please visit: These awards are only available to nationals from the UK and EU and are not open to applicants who are liable to pay academic fees at the international fee rate;
  • Applicants must hold a First Degree at undergraduate level equivalent to at least a UK Upper Second Class Honours degree.  Applicants should either have graduated with the appropriate First Degree or be in their final year of study;
  • Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University’s English Language requirements.  Some Schools require a standard of English higher than the University minimum;
  • These awards are not open to individuals who have already been awarded a Doctoral degree.

REGULATIONS

These include the following (full information on the regulations will be sent to all successful applicants):

Awards must be taken up on 1 October 2011;

  • The awards are available for new research students undertaking full-time (3 years) or part-time (5 years) study leading to the degree of PhD.  Students who are already registered for PhD research study are excluded from this competition;
  • The award will cover academic fees at the UK rate and a maintenance grant of £13,895 for full-time study, part-time will be pro-rata.  There are no additional allowances for travel or research costs;
  • The award will be made for one year in the first instance and renewable for a further period of up to two years, subject to satisfactory academic progress;
  • Applicants must live within a reasonable distance of the University of Leeds whilst in receipt of this Scholarship.

APS/IBM Research Internship for Undergraduate Women

The American Physical Society and IBM co-sponsor a research internship program for undergraduate women. The goal is to encourage women students to pursue graduate studies in science and engineering.

Award

The internships are salaried positions typically 10 weeks long at one of three IBM research locations (San Jose, CA, Austin, TX, or Yorktown Heights, NY), and give the opportunity to work closely with an IBM mentor. The Watson lab has a full range of research, as does the Almaden lab, and the Austin lab focuses on software and systems. Research areas of the internship are individually chosen so as to optimize the match between the skills and interests of the student, and the ongoing research programs of the laboratory. Eligibility

  • Must be female with sophomore or junior standing at a U.S. college or university at the time of application
  • Must be majoring in chemistry, physics, materials science or engineering, computer science or engineering, chemical, electrical, mechanical engineering, or biology, if it has an emphasis on one of the other areas listed

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee at IBM/Almaden and selected based on their commitment to and interest in their major field of study.

The application process consists of an online application, which is submitted through an IBM server; two letters of recommendation, which are to be emailed directly from the recommenders to the internship chair; and an official transcript, which, if possible, is emailed to the internship chair from the registrar’s officer, or if that is not possible is submitted to IBM via postal mail.
