Doctoral Position in Media and Communication studies, Sweden

Research in media and communication studies at Lund University focuses on the sociology of media and culture. We combine quantitative and qualitative research methods with critical social and cultural theory to understand the role of media within broader social, political, and cultural contexts. Our international research includes work on media citizenship and democracy, gender and the media, media scandals, media audiences, popular culture, news, documentary, and reality TV, media health, consumption and advertising, social participation in new media environments, and the sociality and spatiality of media in urban spaces. Our doctoral students work on areas related to social activism, celebrities, media health, and cultural sociology. We run a regular international seminar series, and are developing doctoral courses and forums with other media institutions. We invite applicants with interests in media audiences and popular culture who can make an active contribution to the international profile of the department.

King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals Master and PhD Scholarships 2011, Saudi Arabia

Graduate students are subject to the general regulations of the University which apply to all students and, in addition, to various rules which have been adopted specifically for graduate students on the recommendation of the Graduate Council and approved by the Vice Rector for Graduate Studies and Scientific Research.

An applicant for admission to the Graduate Studies must supply or arrange for the University to receive certain formal documents attesting to his good health and character, and certifying that he has graduated from an approved secondary school system with the equivalent of twelve (12) or more years of combined elementary and secondary school studies in an approved program, that he has graduated from an approved four-year university system with a bachelor-s degree in a subject area which is pertinent to the graduate course offerings at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, and that he has an adequate command of English, the language of instruction at KFUPM. For admission to the Ph.D. Program, the applicant must hold an M.S. degree equivalent in quality and involving the same length of study as those granted at KFUPM. The specific documents required are cited in “Admission Procedures” (see page 36) and on the application forms. Inquiries should be directed to the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Students are admitted to the academic program and the area of specialization which are identified in their application. If this program differs from their previous program of study, they will be required to make up deficiencies after admission. A request for a change of academic program is required for any continuation beyond the original program requested, or for a change to a new program before an existing program is completed. A request for a change in program will be considered as if it were an entirely new application, subject to procedures and standards current at that time.

PhD Studentship in Innovation in the UK Construction Industry, UK

The School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University has an ambitious development strategy which allows us to offer an exciting opportunity for a PhD Studentship. The studentships will pay UK/EU fees and provide a maintenance stipend linked to the RCUK rate (£13,590 per annum for 2011/12) for up to three years. Whilst there is an established need to improve the efficiency and sustainability of buildings the adoption of innovative products and processes supporting this need appears to be at a relatively low level. There seems to be very little incentive in the supply chain to encourage innovation without regulation.
Compared with manufacturing industries investment in research and development in the construction industry is relatively small and appears to be restricted largely to the engagement by product manufacturers in product improvement. Whilst there appears to be an increasing range of valuable and impressive innovative products and/or processes which are developed, the level of integration of these products in new buildings seems limited. Many of these products relate to the work usually carried out by specialist firms who have limited access to, or engagement with, the design team for a project.
