Postdoctoral Fellowship in Social Sciences in Sub-Saharan Africa, 2011

This Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme, funded by the Gulbenkian Foundation, the Volkswagen Foundation and other European partners aims at providing sustainable support for research in Sub-Saharan Africa. Besides an African-European cooperation, special emphasis is put on the development and extension of academic networks within Africa. This call is part of the Foundations’ career development strategy for African researchers in which junior and senior postdoctoral fellows should take responsibility for developing and executing their own research project and show leadership responsibilities for their research group (in the case of senior fellows). The project must be carried out in collaboration with a European partner institution. The call is open to all scholars from Sub-Saharan Africa active in the research fields mentioned below.

ADBE Consumers and Possessions Studentship, UK: A Cross-Disciplinary Exploration of Sustainable Practices

The School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University has an ambitious development strategy which allows us to offer an exciting opportunity for a PhD Studentship. The studentships will pay UK/EU fees and provide a maintenance stipend linked to the RCUK rate (£13,590 per annum for 2011/12) for up to three years. The need to enhance understanding of human behaviour in order to progress towards sustainable patterns of consumption is well recognised, as is evidence that design of our possessions and surroundings locks us into particular forms of behaviour. This is a cross-disciplinary studentship involving research into how people use their possessions and the built environment with regard to sustainability and the implications of this for design practice. One of its key elements will be to relate knowledge in sustainable architecture, sustainable fashion and sustainable product design. Our past research has found evidence of inconsistent behaviour among consumers with regard to their influence upon the environmental impact of different products. Further research is needed to explain these inconsistencies and the University’s Sustainable Consumption Research Group is currently planning a series of cross-disciplinary seminars. These will explore the use of buildings, clothing, household goods and vehicles and consider factors that may lead them to be used in a sustainable manner and reasons for inconsistencies in user behaviour. Other research at the University has proposed a theoretical case for addressing the effect of the material form of products on people’s behaviour. The University’s OPEN Research Group (Objects, Practices, Experiences and Networks) is currently running a series of events through which different perspectives on materials and materiality are being explored. The output of these two initiatives will underpin this studentship, which is intended to enhance understanding of pro-environmental behaviour change.

PhD Studentship in Materials Research, Nottingham Trent University, UK

The School of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University has an ambitious development strategy which allows us to offer an exciting opportunity for a PhD Studentship. The studentships will pay UK/EU fees and provide a maintenance stipend linked to the RCUK rate (£13,590 per annum for 2011/12) for up to three years. Applications are invited from those looking to pursue doctoral study in the subject area of materials research. The research area should aim to implement the scientific knowledge of innovative materials for high-performance applications and/or demonstrate the strategic use of resources utilising new materials and techniques for existing products and processes. Research areas could include a design application related to healthcare, energy, textiles, communication, displays/ lighting, plastics, packaging, sensors/sensing materials or nanotechnology.
The University has recently established a Materials Research Group. This is a new and ambitious innovation that aims to bring together researchers who share an interest in materials from across the University. The group also extends as a research hub connecting with higher education institutions, funding bodies and private enterprise world wide. It also allows individual members to communicate and engage with colleagues and external partners including innovation networks and knowledge transfer networks. The materials research group will also subscribe to a system to distribute research funding calls.
