2011 PhD Position with a Focus on the Didactics of Human Geography, Sweden

The Department of Human Geography, Stockholm University, announces one PhD-position with a focus on the didactics of Human Geography. The position will be attached to the research project described below.The applicant is required to fulfil the general eligibility requirement for Phd studies (a master or ”magister” exam). Additionally, the applicant should fulfil the special eligibility requirement (”särskild behörighet”), i.e. to have achieved pass grades in at least 60 course points in the discipline of human geography/social geography/geography or in an equivalent discipline (e.g. development studies, environmental change and management etc).

Applications will be assessed based on the following criteria:
– scientific and didactic knowledge and skills of relevance to the research project,
– analytical ability and skills in writing, as demonstrated by a scientific report, paper or degree project thesis and
– the applicants potential to contribute to and utilise the research environment at the department.

Studentship in Science Communication and Promotion of High-Energy Physics, UK

Applications are invited for a fully-funded three-year studentship in the field of science communication, specifically to study the promotion of the Large Hadron Collider at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (Cern).
This project will explore and evaluate communication associated with the start-up of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) over a six-year period, including communication produced by media professionals and citizen scientists. It is envisaged that the research undertaken within this studentship will contribute to debates about digital scholarship, public engagement and science communication, making valuable contributions to these related fields in terms of both theory and practice.You should have, or expect to gain, a 2.1 or above in an undergraduate degree or Masters degree in a related subject area (e.g. science communication, media, journalism or communication studies, history, philosophy or sociology of science, or other appropriate discipline).

The Open University is one of the UK’s leading Research Institutions. In the 2008 RAE over 50% of its research was rated as “world leading” or “internationally excellent”.The Open University provides excellent support and offers training in computer, library and presentation skills. Students normally live in, or within commuting distance of Milton Keynes. The studentship may involve opportunities to visit and conduct research at Cern.

The F & M Bank Merit Award for High School Seniors, USA

The F & M Bank Merit Award for the 2011-2012 will be given to a senior at each high school in Rowan and Cabarrus Counties. The scholarship will be in the amount of $500. Should a student qualify for need-based funds, the scholarship becomes part of the total financial aid package.
To be considered for a F & M Bank Award for the 2011-2012
academic year, the student must meet the following criteria:
1. The student must be a graduating senior with a minimum GPA of 2.75.
2. The student must demonstrate academic promise and exhibit the personal characteristics that will lead to success in college.
3. A high school transcript and two letters of recommendation that support the student’s potential for college success must be
submitted with the scholarship application.
4. The student must agree to enroll at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College for the fall semester following spring high school
graduation, as a full-time (at least 12 semester hours) curriculumstudent for a full academic year.
