PhD Studentships in the Cell Biology of Cancer, Beatson Institute for Cancer Research, UK

We are currently re-advertising three of our PhD Studentships (project supervisors: Owen Sansom,  Robert White and Sara Zanivan) Details of each project can be found below. If you have not previously applied and would like to do so, please complete the PhD Application Form. Remember to rename the document with your last name and initials only. We do not accept paper applications, CVs, university transcripts or letters of reference. We will contact your referees separately via email so remember to include their email addresses on your application form. Interviews are likely to be held in March. Students will be selected for interview based on their academic qualifications, research/lab experience and letters of reference. Each candidate will be asked to give a brief 10-minute talk about a research project they have been involved with. This will be followed by one-to-one meetings with selected group leaders as well as lunch with some of our current students. Only reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed by the Institute.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 28 Feb 2011

The studentship offers tuition fees and a maintenance grant in accordance with Research Council eligibility criteria, which means that the studentship is not available to citizens of non-EU countries.
Applicants are asked to submit a cv, and sample piece of written work. They are also asked to propose a research topic within the scope of the project. They should submit this proposal on one side of A4. Topics proposed are expected to fall within the framework of the project and/or drawing on the pliegos sueltos. Some general approaches and possible topics are indicated below.

  • Crime and the fictional imaginary in Spain
  • Against wrongdoing’: discourses of warning and admonishment in the writings of wrongdoing
  • Patterns of response to delitos de sangre (violent crime) in Spain 1800-1900

Systems Biology PhD Studentship in Designing Metabolism at University of Exeter, UK

Biological systems are inherently complex and are a result of evolution. Understanding these systems requires us to draw on mathematical modelling, systems dynamics analysis and in silico simulations of agent-based model systems. In this project, we will utilise these approaches to understand the cellular metabolic networks of bacteria and to design them de novo.
Nature has an immense capacity to produce useful metabolites from simple building blocks. Even “simple” single celled organisms can use a handful of basic molecules, available to them in the environment, to make an array of diverse compounds. These are then utilised as energy source, molecular signals or even as toxins. Humans use such compounds in their diet, as medicines or in industrial applications. As such, it is of immediate value to understand the structure and dynamics of metabolic networks responsible for the production of diverse metabolites. Our analysis will combine approaches from graph theory, control theory and evolutionary biology to achieve such an understanding. We will then use the insight to manipulate existing metabolic networks in order to increase yield of specific products, or to design entirely novel networks.
