The University of Cape Town Research Associateships, South Africa

The Research Associateships have been established to provide prestigious awards to reward excellent student researchers, who are registered for full-time study and to recognise and support the work of their supervisors.
The purpose of the Research Associateships is to align reward and recognition of the research undertaken by students and their supervisors, with the University’s strategic objectives to be research-led and to be a transforming university.

Eligibility Criteria
o Only students who are registered for full-time study for the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of the Doctoral degree
o Upgrades: Where a student has upgraded from Masters to Doctoral, she/he is eligible only in the 1st and 2nd year of DOCTORAL study (notwithstanding the number of years that she/he was registered for Masters).
o Only students who are registered for full-time study in the 1st and 2nd years of a Master’s degree by dissertation only
o Only students who are registered for full-time study in the 2nd year of a Master’s degree by coursework and research.
o Students registered for full-time study in the Commerce Faculty for a 4-year Doctoral degree (whereby the 1st year consists of coursework and is certificated) are eligible and may be nominated in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year.
o Students who meet the above criteria must be NOMINATED by their supervisors. Individual application from students will not be accepted.
o Full time Staff members are not eligible.

PhD Studentship in the Department of Music and Sound Recording at University of Surrey, UK

We are pleased to offer two studentships to conduct PhD research in music within the department. The successful applicants will each have a good first degree and a Masters’ degree with an appropriate specialisation, within the field of music (details of departmental specialisms can be found on the departmental website). They will have a strong interest in academic research, will have good organisational and IT skills, and will be able to work both independently and in a team. They will first register for PhD within the department during the academic year 2110/12, researching an approved topic.

One studentship is full-time fees only. The second studentship is part-time fees only. The holder will not be expected to contribute to the department’s teaching, although there may be a possibility of undertaking some teaching.These studentships are available from September 2011. You may apply for both, but must state clearly for which you are applying, and why. You may not hold more than one. Studentships will cover Home/EU fees only, although non-EU applicants are welcome (in which case the studentship will be put towards the fee).

PhD Position in Atmospheric Science, The Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Germany

The International Max Planck Research School for Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics offers in 2011 to excellent students with a Master degree or diploma in natural science PhD projects in an highly international working environment at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz / Germany. Very good English skills are necessary. First experiences in analytics, instrument development or computer modelling can be beneficial. Two reference letters are requisite.

PhD projects may include research in laboratory work on atmospheric trace gases or aerosols, field measurements in diverse world regions or computer modelling of atmospheric chemistry and physics. Details depend on the focus of our research.
Excellent applications are always welcome, there is no specific deadline for admission to the PhD program. PhD candidates will benefit from an educational program and brand-new institute facilities. Mainz is a student city in the middle Rhine-Valley close to the popular region of Frankfurt with excellent international connections.
