PhD Research Fellow in Numerical Optimization of Reinforced Concrete Structures, Denmark

The research project deals with application of numerical optimization methods for design and analysis of reinforced concrete structures. The goal is to combine finite element technology with modern optimization algorithms to develop numerical tools for design and analysis of large scale problems. Subjects that may be dealt with include:
1) Development of lower- and upper bound finite plate and disk elements.
2) Formulation of numerical procedures for the determination of optimal reinforcement layout in concrete plates and disks with regard to both strength and stiffness criteria.
3) Development of procedure for elasto-plastic analysis of cracked reinforced concrete structures within the framework of convex optimization.

The project will be conducted in collaboration with researchers from The University of Newcastle, Australia, at which an exchange research stay is also planned to take place as a part of the PhD project.

Candidates with a M.Sc. degree in civil- or structural engineering, a strong background in computational mechanics and documented knowledge in limit analysis of reinforced concrete structures are invited to apply.

University of Pretoria Postgraduate Scholarships 2011, South Africa

In each budget cycle, the Budget and Planning Committee recommends to the Vice-Principal’s Committee what amount should be allocated for postgraduate scholarships in the respective faculties. Awards to individual students are subject to approval by the Research Committees of the respective Faculties.
UP postgraduate scholarships are available to students who register for an Honours degree, a research Masters degree as defined in appendix 1 or a Doctoral programme at the University of Pretoria.

Students who are enrolled for a four-year bachelor’s degree programme do not qualify for an honours degree scholarship in their final year, i.e. the fourth year of study.
– Scholarships are awarded to applicants on the grounds of the contribution that their study is likely to make to specific focal areas of research, which are determined by the University from time to time.
– Postgraduate students are automatically considered for a scholarship once they have been admitted to a postgraduate program by the Faculty (no application for a bursary required). (Refer to 5.3 and 5.4).
– Awards to particular candidates will be determined by Faculty Research Committees that will consider the performance of the candidates to whom they make awards.
– Students who have not completed their preceding study programme will not be considered for a UP postgraduate scholarship. Special study programmes (including diplomas and certificates) as well as study programmes that do not qualify for subsidy purposes are not taken into consideration.
– Scholarships are awarded once only for a postgraduate study programme. Students who hold a postgraduate qualification will not be considered for a scholarship for postgraduate study at the same level (e.g. students who enrol for a second or even a third honours degree, Masters Degree or Doctoral programme).
– Students who simultaneously register for an undergraduate and a postgraduate programme, e.g. BTH and BA (Honours) in Greek may be considered for both the UP undergraduate achievement bursary and the postgraduate scholarship.

Mathematics Training and Talent Search Programme (MTTS) 2011, India

During the “Discussion Meeting on Harmonic Analysis” held at I.I.Sc. Bangalore in 1992, a session was devoted to discuss the academic preparation of the students who come for Ph.D. programmes in Mathematics in various Universities and Institutions in the country. In order to improve the level of Ph.D. aspirants it was felt that a training programme should be started (starting at the B.Sc. level itself) which should expose bright young minds to the excitement of doing mathematics. The National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) was approached with the proposal and it agreed to fund the programme. The first programme was held in the summer of 1993. This programme has been on since 1993 with funds from NBHM. The programme was highly appreciated by the participants. We receive letters of appreciation from both teachers and the participants. The success of this programme depends mainly on a very small group of mathematicians committed to the improvement of the mathematical scene in our country and as such lacks man-power and infrastructure.
