Doctorate Degree | Scholarship for Nigerians and Africans - Part 387

The Department of Design at Goldsmiths

The Department of Design at Goldsmiths, University of London, is pleased to announce one 3-year, fully funded, PhD studentship in Design, available from October 2010 or January 2011. The successful applicant will have their fees waived and receive an annual stipend at the standard RCUK level of £13590 per year.

The student will be expected to make a strong contribution to research in the department, working with established researchers on topics close to their own. Examples of relevant research groups and interests within the department include:

  • The Interaction Research Studio : socially-oriented and speculative interaction design. Current projects focus on design for interpretation and reframing online information for specific situations.
  • The PI studio : ubiquitous computing, product innovation, and design for public spaces.
  • Technology Education Research Unit : exploring design processes, including through digital capture, in the contexts of learning, teaching, assessment and research.
  • Environmental Design : critically sensitive design interventions focused on environmental issues. Current projects focus on ecological urbanism, designing for political engagement and participation, and creative practice for climate change.
  • New Materials : the nature, attributes of and applications for new materials for design

They are looking for a truly top calibre student to receive this award. Applicants should hold, or expect to have attained, a masters degree (distinction or merit) by the time the studentship commences. We are particularly interested in applicants with significant design experience or experience in academia, with a good track record of design in professional or research contexts, and/or a track record of research and publication. As part of the studentship, the successful candidate will be expected to carry out light teaching and/or administrative duties, normally in years 2 and 3.

To Apply:
Applications should be sent by e-mail to Prof Bill Gaver, Postgraduate Convener, on w.gaver@gold.ac.uk, and should consist of a short covering letter, a research proposal (maximum 2,000 words) and a full CV, including
names of two academic referees.

Application deadline: 31 August 2010.

Interview date: week commencing 6 September 2010.

PhD Scholarship of Physics

Active participation in one of the research projects:
1. Quantum communication and quantum techniques.
a. Study of novel multi-photon entangled states, and new ways to generate and to analyze entangled
states in the experiments.
b. Limitations of quantum informational processes.
2. Characterization of information processing by quantum networks with noise.
3. Bound entanglement and quantum information processing.
4. New approach to statistical description of quantum dynamical systems.
5. Spectroscopic characterization of materials for quantum processing.
6. Characterization of fluoride and oxide materials doped with selected Ln ions for purpose of photon down conversion
and cascade emission.
7. Modern persistent luminescence and storage materials.
8. Resonance excitation energy and polarization transfer in nanolayers.

Profile of candidates: (for more details see the Web page)
1. MA degree in physics, technical physics, mathematics (or other, with good background in physics).
2. Good command of English.
3. Motivation to conduct state-of-the-art research in theoretical and/or experimental physics.

Required documents:
1. A letter of motivation, explaining (briefly) candidate’s interests. This is especially important in case of candidates
who studied disciplines other than physics.
2. A copy of candidates MA thesis (in electronic version, preferably in .pdf format file).
3. Authenticated copy of the MA diploma, or an equivalent document proving that the candidate already passed MA exam.
4. Opinion of the candidate’s diploma supervisor.
5. Curriculum vitae containing information on:
* candidate’s education and marks he/she obtained during the studies (this should be authenticated
by corresponding authorities);
* candidates previous (if any) scientific career (publications, experience, conferences, etc.);
* other information which the candidate considers important or favorable.

Application Deadline 20 September 2010

Hevesy Laboratory at Risø DTU

Applications are invited from enthusiastic and talented individuals for a PhD scholarship in radiochemistry at the Hevesy Laboratory at Risø DTU.

The Hevesy Laboratory is a radiochemical and radiopharmaceutical facility at Risø DTU. The laboratory has a 16.5 MeV cyclotron equipped with a beam line for in-house production of isotopes, including 18F for PET scanning. The research laboratories and clean rooms feature state of the art equipment for radioactive and stable isotope chemistry.

At present, we are 20 people in a multidisciplinary team, working with both research and production. Among the research activities currently conducted are 18F chemistry, tritium chemistry and Auger emitting nuclides for therapy.

Research:
Drawing on recent advances in organic-, organometallic- and radiochemistry the successful candidate will explore new methods of 18F-C bond formation using 18F fluoride. The research will also include the development of new methodologies for extraction of 18F-fluoride from target water and converting it into an efficient fluorination source.

Qualifications:
Candidates should have (or be about to obtain) a master’s degree in engineering, radiochemistry, organic- or organometallic chemistry or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering. The candidate should also demonstrate a strong commitment to research.

Salary and appointment terms:
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.

Further information :
You are welcome to contact Senior Researcher Fedor Zhuravlev, +45 4677 5337 or Head of Hevesy Laboratory Palle Rasmussen, +45 7677 5332.

Application:
The application deadline is 1 September 2010. Please open the link “apply for this job online” and fill in the application form and attach the following documents: 1) a Cover Letter, 2) a CV, including list of publications, 3) a copy of your academic transcripts.
