The Vienna Biocenter

The Vienna Biocenter (VBC) PhD programme was created in 1993 with the aim of providing biology students from all over the world with the possibility for training and research in the attractive scientific environment of the Vienna Biocenter. Successful candidates are accepted as PhD students initially for three years with the possibility of an extension into the fourth year. The PhD degree will be obtained from the Life Sciences Faculty of the Vienna University or the Medical University of Vienna. The Vienna Biocenter International PhD programme in Molecular Life Sciences is the longest running and most successful PhD programme at the Vienna Biocenter.

Successful candidates in this programme have access to excellent facilities and remuneration at one of the highest levels in Europe.

Research at the VBC covers a range of topics which include: neurobiology, epigenetics, plant biology, cell biology, immunology, development & disease, structural biology, computational biology and RNA biology. The VBC PhD programme supports its students in their scientific explorations, providing state-of-the-art equipment, expert scientific advisors, and extensive scientific and administrative support. The VBC PhD programme is the place for young researchers to put their creativity, ideas, and enthusiasm to work, addressing fundamental questions about how life works.

Highly qualified applicants from all over the world are invited to apply, provided that they are not older than 30 years at the time of application. The applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent from a university in the field of Natural Sciences. It is also possible to apply when the master’s degree is received within six months after the application deadline. This university degree should qualify for the start of a doctorate thesis in their home country and ideally should be equivalent to a European university diploma/degree.

There are two selections each year, the application deadlines are as follows:
Winter selection – 15 November (website opens for applications on 15 September)

Summer selection – 30 April (website opens for applications on 1 March)

The UCT/CSIR Scholarship programme for South Africa Students

Job Description: Applications are invited for a limited number of scholarships for South African students who will register in 2011 at the University of Cape Town for the Honours, Master’s and Doctoral degrees, within the following disciplines, or in closely related disciplines:

Information and Communication Technologies
Environmental Technologies
Engineering
Materials Science and Manufacturing

Eligibility
Only students who register as full-time students and who are proceeding into the FIRST year of the degree are eligible. Students who will register in 2011 for a 2nd year of Masters or 2nd or 3rd year of PhD are INELIGIBLE. Only students who will register for study in one (or more) of the areas of study shown above are eligible.

Value of Awards
Honours – R60,000; Masters – R70,000; Doctoral – R80,000 per annum

Tenure
Honour’s – strictly 1 year; Master’s – 2 Years – Second year renewable on proof of satisfactory progress, and Doctoral – 3 Years – Second and third years renewable on proof of satisfactory progress.

Application Procedure
1. A letter of application addressed to the Director of the PGC&FO, UCT and a completed Application Form available from the Postgraduate Funding Office or from URL: http://www.uct.ac.za/apply/funding/postgraduate/applications/

2. A one A-4 page CV giving the future intentions of the applicant.

3. 2 letters of reference from academics who have taught/supervised the applicants in the past three years

4. All original or certified copies of university transcripts (do not include certificates), including those of the applicant’s undergraduate degree(s).

5. Proof of acceptance of the student into the proposed academic department, in the form of a brief letter/statement from the Faculty Manager.

6. Master’s and Doctoral applicants – A copy of the applicant’s abstract of the proposed study (no longer than ONE A-4 page) and an indication that a Supervisor has been secured and that the research proposal has been accepted by the Department.

7. Applicants must be prepared to enter into a contract with the CSIR in which the student undertakes to enter into employment with the CSIR for at least the tenure of the scholarship held, provided that suitable vacancies exist within the CSIR

8. Short-listed Applicants must be prepared to undergo interviews with officials from the CSIR

Edith Cowan University Western Australia

Job Description: The Graduate Research School of Edith Cowan University Western Australia offers PhD and Master Research Scholarships for the 2010/11 session to International Students at University.
The EIPRS scheme is prestigious and highly competitive. In 2009 three EIPRS scholarships and four ECU-IPRS were offered for tenure at Edith Cowan University.

Scholarship WORTH
The scholarships provide the recipient with tuition fee and health care cover for the duration of their research program. In addition, each successful EIPRS recipient will be offered an ECU International Stipend (ECUIS) to meet living costs for the same period. The ECUIS is currently worth AUD$25,000 per year (tax free).

STUDY ELIGIBILITY
International scholarships at ECU are restricted only to those applicants wishing to study either a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master by Research and commencing their studies. ECU does not currently offer scholarships for international students at postgraduate coursework level.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (EIPRS) applicants must have an outstanding academic record and a significant publication record. Successful applicants normally have academic qualifications that are equivalent to either an Australian Bachelor degree with First Class Honours or an Australian Master degree by research.
Note: Applications from students with lesser qualifications will not be considered. Qualifications gained outside of Australia may be assessed by Australian Education International to determine how they compare to an Australian qualification.

ECU International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (ECU-IPRS) are only open to PhD or Master by Research applicants applying for study in ECU’s area of research strength and have an outstanding academic record and publication record.
Also, to be eligible for either scholarship, applicants MUST meet English entry requirements for the course applying for and be a commencing student (not enrolled at the time of applying).
