University of Dublin Trinity College PhD studentship in Physics (Photonics), Ireland

Applications are sought from suitably qualified candidates to undertake research towards a PhD degree in Physics. The candidates must ne citizens of European Union, have a first-class or upper second-class honours degree in Physics or a related discipline before the studentship begins and will work under the supervision of Prof. Eithne McCabe in the School of Physics in Trinity College Dublin. This training programme will include advanced specialized courses in Years 1 and 2, and students will benefit from the courses in Innovation and Entrepreneurship and generic skills training offered by the Innovation Academy. This PRTLI5-funded structured PhD programme integrates with existing research strengths of the School of Physics.
The project will involve novel imaging using surface plasmons. For more than a century the emphasis has been on diffraction limited resolution. In recent years many exciting, new approaches have emerged in terms of both imaging on the nanoscale and using nanoparticles to highlight charcateristics of a sample. The optical characteristics of many systems can be significantly enhanced by plasmonics. They promise to have a major impact in many areas of nanoscience including photonic electronics where surface plasmon polaritons offer promise in the miniaturisation of photonis circuits. This project will investigate the physics and applications of plasmonics in novel imaging environments.
The studentship, with a stipend of €16,000 per annum, is available from September 2011.

JRF, SRF and RA Positions at Translational Health Science And Technology Institute, India

Translational Health Science And Technology Institute (THSTI) is an autonomous Institute of the Department of Biotechnology under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. THSTI has been developed as a part of the interdisciplinary Health biotech Science cluster to be located at Faridabad which is a part of the National Capital Region. The Institute is being mentored by globally recognized National Institute of Immunology (NII) and the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Science and Technology (HMHST). THSTI is designed to be a dynamic and interactive organization with a mission to conduct innovative translational research and develop research collaborations across disciplines and professions to accelerate the development of concepts into tangible products to improve human health. The other members of the cluster include The Regional Centre of Biotechnology (RCB) under the aegis of UNESCO and the NII with which the THSTI will have a seamless collaboration to achieve the interdisciplinary expertise. The cluster will have access to the state of the art experimental animal facility and the platform technology center for the sophisticated instrumentation. The permanent laboratories of the centre will come up in Faridabad within 3 years. The interim laboratories of the centre are functioning from Gurgaon in the South of Delhi area with adequate housing, transportation and schooling facilities. Campus housing may be available when the centre moves to Faridabad.Vaccine and Infectious Disease Research Center (VIDRC) has been set up as a mission center of the THSTI to study infectious disease and pathogens with the aim to generate translational knowledge for developing prophylactic and therapeutic measures against diseases prevalent in India.
Eligibility: RA : Doctorate (PhD/MD) or an equivalent degree or 3 years of research experience after MVSc / MPharm.

2011 Postdoctoral Training Fellowships for MB/PhD Graduates, UK: Medical, veterinary or dental

This scheme provides a unique opportunity for the most promising newly qualified MB/PhD graduates, or those who have achieved a high-quality PhD during or before starting their medical degree. It will enable successful candidates to make an early start in developing their independent research careers, by undertaking a period of postdoctoral training in the best laboratories in the UK and overseas, and can be tailored to allow them to continue their postgraduate clinical training.Fellowships are for up to four years (see ‘Eligibility’) and, depending on the duration of the fellowship, would not be expected to exceed £350 000. Fellowships provide:

a salary set by the host institution, according to age and experience
research expenses (e.g. materials and consumables, animals, small items of equipment)
travel and overseas subsistence
support to attend scientific meetings.
No funding is provided for course fees or examination fees.

Support funds for research staff or substantial equipment are not normally provided. It is expected that an appropriate laboratory(ies) will be selected and that the majority of the necessary equipment and facilities required for the proposed research be available to the candidate.Fellowships may be taken up on a part-time employment basis, where appropriate. Applicants are advised to consult their training authority when designing the clinical component of their application.
