PhD Studentship in Immunobiology of Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Skeletal Tissue Engineering, Newcastle University, UK

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a significant healthcare burden and preventing or slowing its onset would alleviate considerable patient disability and suffering.  The use of cell therapies offers an exciting opportunity to treat early stage osteochondral lesions that otherwise would go on to initiate osteoarthritic changes.  One strategy is to use the patients own cells alone or in conjunction with a biomaterial scaffold to rebuild the diseased tissue.  As part of the Arthritis Research UK Tissue Engineering Centre our research is focused on understanding the immunophenotype of adult mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and chondrocytes or osteoblasts derived from this source. Approaches to the isolation of MSCs will be investigated and processes implemented to current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) ensuring their translation to clinical use.  The immunobiology of MSCs and chondrocytes or osteoblasts differentiated in culture will be investigated by a number of approaches including flow cytometry.
Eligibility:The award covers University fees at the UK/EU rate and a stipend matched to the minimum Research Council recommended stipend, £13,590 (2010/11).  Candidates from outside UK/EU may apply but tuition fees will only be paid at the UK/EU rate.

Hydro Fellowship Programme 2011, USA: Hydroelectric technology, including efficiency improvements and environmental mitigation.

The Hydro Research Foundation is pleased to solicit applications for the Hydro Research Foundation Fellowship Program.  The Program is funded by a grant from the Department of Energy. These Fellowships are designed to allow outstanding early-career researchers to facilitate research related to hydropower.  Research undertaken by the Foundation and its Fellows seeks to advance knowledge about hydroelectric technology, including efficiency improvements and environmental mitigation.  Through this program the Foundation is promoting educational opportunities and information development related to hydropower.  Innovation, creativity and forward-thinking research are encouraged. The Foundation envisions that the selected researchers will eventually assume leadership roles in the hydroelectric field.  Fellows are selected based on research vision, innovation, academic performance, potential for leadership and overall strength of their research proposal.Hydro Research Foundation Fellows will be awarded two years of support for applied research in the field of hydropower.  Fellowship applicants must have completed a bachelors degree by the date of the Fellowship award and be a full time Masters or Doctoral Student. Each Fellow will be monitored by an academic sponsor who will encourage the continual development of the Fellow. Eligibility: Eligible applicant must have completed at a minimum a bachelor’s degree by the start date of the fellowship.
Applicant must be a full-time student at a U.S. university in a Masters or Doctoral level program to received funding.
The expectation is that the applicant must be a full-time student who will able to complete their Masters degree in two years or their Doctorate Degree preferably in two years, but not more than three years.

PhD Scholarship in Experimental Fluid Mechanics, University of Sydney, Australia

The Faculty of Engineering & IT of the University of Sydney, Australia, invites applications for a PhD position beginning in August 2011. The purpose of the project is to explore the interactions of the atmospheric boundary layer in complex terrains (topography and surface heterogeneity) with wind turbines. The successful candidate will carry out experimental studies (using stereo-PIV, tomo-PIV and hot-wire anemometry) in the 25-m long Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel of the School of Civil Engineering. The successful applicant will join a team that aims to develop and validate turbulence models that will be used to predict and study the effects o f complex atmospheric boundary layers on wind turbine wakes.
Applicants should have a Master in Engineering or Physics (or equivalent) and experience in at least one of the following areas: Wind Tunnel Testing, PIV, Atmospheric Boundary Layer, or, Wind Turbine Aerodynamics.The scholarship stipend is valued at $25,000 per annum (tax exempt) for up to three years. A tuition fee scholarship of up to A$ 30,000 per annum is also being offered if tuition fees are payable.
