PhD Studentship in Genomics in Diplomonads, Sweden: Genomics in Diplomonads

Excellent candidates with an academic degree at the Masters level in molecular biology and/or biotechnology are invited to apply. Experience in molecular parasitology is required and a background in genome analyses is a merit. The research project will be conducted in a very active environment as part of a group consisting of, at present two PhD students and 1 post-doc. Activities center around the pathogenesis and evolution of protozoan parasites. In particular, the focus is on development of tools for diagnosis of the intestinal parasites Giardia intestinalis and Spironucleus salmonicida. The PhD student will be expected to teach and/or supervise during lab courses, in Swedish or English, for at most 20% of the time.

Kitt Peak National Observatory Research Scholarship for Undergraduates, USA: Astrophysics

Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO), a division of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory (NOAO), anticipates being able to offer six research assistant positions for the summer of 2010 through the NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program. The KPNO REU program provides an exceptional opportunity for undergraduates considering a career in science to engage in substantive research activities with NOAO scientists working in the forefront of contemporary astrophysics. Each REU student is hired as a full-time research assistant to work on specific aspects of major ongoing research projects at NOAO which include the origin, nature, and evolution of stars, galaxies and stellar systems, observational cosmology, analysis of Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer Space Telescope images, and Kepler Mission light curves. As part of their research activities, REU students gain first-hand experience with KPNO’s state-of-the-art telescopes and develop expertise in astronomical data reduction and analysis.

Participants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. The positions are full-time for 10 to 12 weeks between June and August, with a preferred starting date in early June. A salary of $675.00 per week and funds to cover travel to and from Tucson, Arizona, are provided. Summer housing is the responsibility of the student. Students have a choice to either live on campus at the University of Arizona or rent an apartment or house off campus.

Postdoctoral position at KTH, Sweden: Astrophysics

KTH School of Computer Science and Communication (CSC) announces a post-doctoral position with a focus on the approximability of NP-hard optimization problems.
The goal of the current project is to show mathematical theorems relating to efficient computation. The project studies NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems of central importance and aims to establish theoretical bounds on how well each problem can be approximated in polynomial time. The goal is to prove upper bounds by designing and analyzing algorithms and to prove lower bounds in the form of hardness results. A more detailed description of the project can be found at
