Postdoctoral in Centre for Plasma Astrophysics at K.U.Leuven, Netherlands

The Centre for Plasma Astrophysics (CPA) of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium) accepts applications for one postodoctoral position within the framework of the SWIFF consortium funded by the European Commission within the FP7 program (swiff.eu). SWIFF encompasses 7 centers in 5 European countries.
The activities will focus on the development of physical-mathematical models, algorithm and software to study multiple scale processes in the solar corona (flares, CMEs), the propagation of the solar wind and its disturbances and the study of the magnetosphere and its connection with solar activity. The work will be theoretical, focusing on linking different fluid models (e.g. Hall MHD or twi fluid with MHD) and fluid with kinetic models. The work will be based on the extensive previous expertise in the field of high performance computing, space science and its application to space weather at the CPA and within the SWIFF consortium.
The selected candidates will have expertise in at least one of the following areas:
Solar physics, Magnetospheric physics,Solar wind,Expertise on computer programming with C, C++ or Fortran,Plasma physics, astrophysics or space physics, Numerical methods for fluid dynamics, MHD and kinetic physics particle in cell methods.

The researchers will have access to large parallel computer facilities and to a stimulating research environment within the CPA and the SWIFF consortium. The researchers will be employed by the K.U.Leuven, but collaborations with other centers of SWIFF are encouraged. The work place is Leuven, a historic university town (our university is one of the oldest in Europe, founded in 1425) located just 20 minutes from the center of Brussel and 15 minutes from the Brussel airport, making it easily reachable to international travelers. Leuven is an international city located in the Flemish (Dutch speaking) part of Belgium where English and French are spoken routinely in all places (from University and public offices to shops and entertainment venues).

Fermilab Fellowships in Theoretical Physics 2011, USA: Theoretical particle physics or theoretical astrophysics

Fermilab announces fellowships for graduate students at U.S. universities who are in the research phase of graduate study in theoretical particle physics or theoretical astrophysics. These fellowships will last for one year (12 months), generally starting in the Fall. They will carry a competitive stipend as well as allowances for travel and (reduced) tuition. Fellows will remain matriculated at their home universities but be in residence at Fermilab. To be eligible, prospective fellows must identify a Fermilab supervisor from the scientific staff of either the Theoretical Physics Department or Theoretical Astrophysics Department. These departments offer strong and exciting research opportunities in collider physics, model building, neutrino physics, perturbative QCD, lattice gauge theory, astrophysics, and cosmology. The research environment at Fermilab, while theoretically rigorous, is nourished by close connections with the laboratory’s experimental programs. Applications will be taken through academicjobsonline (if needed, select FFThPh2011). Applicants must submit a CV and a plan for research while at Fermilab. Applicants should arrange for their university supervisor to submit a letter of recommendation explaining not only the applicant’s suitability for fellowship but also how research at Fermilab would enrich the applicant’s graduate studies. Finally, the Fermilab staff member supervising the student’s research will have to prepare a short written summary of research goals during the fellowship. This summary may be written after the application has been submitted, but it is highly recommended that applicants contact potential supervisors as soon as possible. Postdoctoral Research in Interpretation of Atmospheric Spectra of Extra-Solar Planets at University of Oxford, UK

We invite applications for a postdoctoral research position starting on 1 July 2011 or soon thereafter, to work on the interpretation of atmospheric spectra of extra-solar planets, as part of a joint effort between the Astrophysics and AOPP (Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics) sub-departments. The project aims to adapt existing spectral inversion techniques, developed in the solar system context, to extra-solar planets. The focus of this position is to improve the spectroscopic line data for key molecules using existing laboratory facilities, to incorporate these into the NEMESIS spectral inversion package, and to work with Astrophysics observers to interpret existing and prepare future observations of exoplanet atmospheres.

The appointment is for two years, initially be based in AOPP, and moving to Astrophysics after approximately six months. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Astrophysics, Planetary or Atmospheric Physics or a directly related field, be highly motivated and keen to engage with both data analysis and experimental work. Experience with radiative transfer and/or modelling of planetary atmospheres is highly desirable. The candidate will work closely with Dr S Aigrain (Astrophysics, observations of transiting planets), Dr N Bowles (AOPP, spectroscopy experiments) and Dr P Irwin (AOPP, NEMESIS package), but will be encouraged to interact with other faculty members working in related areas.
