Scholarships and Bursary Awards from IOM3, UK: Minerals and Mining disciplines

The Institute awards a number of scholarships and bursaries in the minerals and mining disciplines, as detailed below. Preference for these is given to Institute members, and for the Centenary Scholarship, Student Membership of the Institute is a requirement.The Institute judges the applications received for each award in respect of academic excellence and scholarship. The application must therefore specify academic ability. Candidates merely seeking assistance for financial hardship will not be considered.

Applicants for these awards must ensure that the particular fund from which support is being sought is relevant to their field(s) of interest. Applications not in accordance with the specified terms and conditions of the various funds, those which are received after the closing date each year, and those for which the appropriate levels of support have not been received by that date, will not be accepted for consideration.

Talisman Vietnam Postgraduate Scholarship for International Students, Canada: Petroleum Geosciences,Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Physics, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Chemical and Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Natural Resources, Energy and Environment

With the objectives of contribution to enhancing quality of the local workforce in oil and gas industry of Vietnam, Talisman Vietnam Limited (TVL) is pleased to sponsor two full postgraduate scholarships for fall enrolment of academic year 2011 for Vietnamese professionals wishing to undertake a Master’s degree in petroleum related fields at the University of Alberta (U of A), Canada.

The scholarships aim to provide opportunities for postgraduate study at the U of A for young professionals in early or mid-career, who demonstrate both academic excellence and the potential to become leaders, decision-makers and opinion-formers in Vietnam.

Each scholarship provides tuition fee at the U of A, a stipend to cover living costs (for one person only) for maximum two years and return air travel to Vietnam (the return flight must be taken within three weeks of completion of the program of study).
3. Who is eligible to apply?
Applicants must:
• display intellectual ability and leadership potential;
• meet minimum English language standards – IELTS band score 6.5 (with not less than 5.0 in any skill) or paper based TOEFL minimum score of 550 (paper-based) or a total score of 88 with a score of at least 20 on each of the individual skill areas (internet-based).
• If you apply for MBA degree, in addition to the English Language skills evidence above, you need to provide either GMAT score minimum 600 (paper-based) or 100 (internet-based) with at least 20 on each of the individual skill area or GRE 1100 total (verbal 450 and quantitative 650)
and will normally be expected to:
• have a good academic record. Only candidates with an “excellent” (gioi or xuat sac – 8.0+) or “good” (kha – 7.5+) first degree will be considered.
• not already have received or be currently receiving financial benefit from a previous Government-Funded Scholarship;
• not already had the chance of studying in Canada or another developed country;
• not already been awarded a university doctorate from another academic institution;
• Industry experience would be a plus

Two PhD Positions in Statistics, Uppsala University, Sweden

Starting date: 1st of September 2011 or as agreed upon

The discipline of Statistics analyses and develops methods to interpret and draw scientific conclusions from data. The main research areas at the Division of Statistics are time series analysis/econometrics and structural equation modelling.

Eligible for a PhD position is the student with a Master degree, completed courses of 240 ECTS points, whereof at least 60 ECTS points on Master level, or equivalent. Further, the specific entry requirement is 90 ECTS points in statistics or equivalent. Solid background in mathematics and in applied science is considered a merit.

The graduate study normally comprises four years of full-time studies. Studies include 105 ECTS of courses and a dissertation of 135 ECTS. The thesis (or the articles that it consists of) should be publishable in international scientific journals. It should be defended on a seminar with an external discussant and a grading committee.

3. Undergraduate/Master thesis/theses in statistics (in Swedish or English).
4. Description of research interests.
5. Other relevant documents.
