Newcastle University International Postgraduate Scholarship (NUIPS), UK

Newcastle University is delighted to announce 70 new Newcastle University International Postgraduate Scholarship (NUIPS) awards. These are available for international students starting their studies in September 2011, in the 2011-12 academic years. Each scholarship will have a value of £1,500 per year, payable towards tuition.
Eligibility: You could be eligible to apply for a NUIPS award if: you have been offered a place on any postgraduate taught degree programme. You have been assessed as international/overseas for fees purposes. you hold a first class honours degree and IELTS 7.0.  Applicants holding an upper second (2:1) equivalent degree and IELTS 7.0 will be considered on a competitive basis by the closing date for applications.    Applicants who do not hold a first class or upper second honours degree at the time of their scholarship application will be considered for NUIPS awards conditional upon their final degree grade.You intend to register to start your studies during the 2011-12 academic year.
Applications for a NUIPS award cannot be made for a course that has already been started by a student.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 27th May 2011

The Bommies Award 2010 by Great Barrier Reef Foundation

The Bommies will be awarded for a solution or adaption concept for the Reef, which meets the following criteria:
• Is innovative;
• Delivers practical outcomes to reef managers;
• Has climate change and the Reef’s viability as its primary focus;
• Has as its goal a measurable impact on the sustainability of the Reef; and
• Not otherwise diminish the economic social or cultural value of the Reef.
The Prize :The Bommies Award Sculpture Artist, Dr Vera Möller has created the sculpture, entitled Bomborella, to mark the award. Vera describes the work as a fictional coral species, a hypothetical specimen, an imaginary marine life form, yet to be discovered.The winner of the Bommies Award will receive a prize of $10,000 and a work on paper rendering an image of the sculpture.An honour plaque linked to the sculpture will also record award recipients over time.

Eligibility :Any postgraduate, who is an Australian resident and less than 36 years of age, may enter The Bommies Award.
Applicants will be asked to demonstrate innovative thinking, a willingness to work with different collaborators across a broad spectrum of disciplines and experience, and a commitment to addressing the challenges of climate change on coral reefs, in ways that may not have been thought of before.

Scholarship Application Deadline:
25 March 2011

9 PhD Studentships in Dynamic Molecular Nanostructures, University of Cambridge, UK

Nine Early Stage Researcher (ESR) positions are offered in the FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) DYNAMOL – Dynamic Molecular Structures. The DYNAMOL ITN is a research-training European network involving institutions across Europe (9 from the academic sector and 2 from the private sector) which aims to train a new generation of highly skilled chemists in dynamic covalent chemistry and push this emerging field of research into applications at the cutting-edge of nanotechnology. Expertise of all partners encompasses the general areas of supramolecular chemistry and dynamic covalent chemistry, but individual research competences are quite diverse focussing on molecularly defined nanostructures, analysis of nanostructures, and novel applications.
The ITN DYNAMOL will establish a powerful new approach for the preparation of nanostructures based on dynamic covalent chemistry. Dynamic covalent chemistry combines the advantages of covalent synthesis (robustness of the bonds) with those of non-covalent synthesis (error correction, responsiveness) without any of the disadvantages (lability in the case of non-covalent chemistry and synthetic difficulty in accessing large structures through traditional covalent synthesis). This method therefore has the potential to provide unique solutions for several important challenges in the preparation of molecular nanostructures that still need to be addressed, such as the creation of low symmetry nano-sized assemblies and molecular nanostructures with specific functions or the use of orthogonal chemical reactions to increase structural complexity. The training program aims to improve theoretical, practical and complementary skills of the recruited ESRs. To this end, it includes state-of-the-art local training activities and network-wide courses and workshops as well as secondments in partner laboratories.

Scholarship Application Deadline: 30 April 2011
