PhD Studentship in the Field of Sustainability Transitions and Innovation Studies,Netherlands

One of the greatest challenges for global sustainability is the nature of development in rapidly-growing Asian countries. It is recognised, not least in these countries themselves, that a ‘greener’ model of growth is needed, taking account of rising scarcity and prices of key inputs like energy, as well as limits imposed by regional and global environmental systems, including climate.

New more sustainable technologies will be fundamental to new models of growth. But the key question is: where do these technologies emerge and how do they come to be widely adopted? Much literature on technology and development argues that through a process of ‘catch up’ technological capabilities and innovation systems are built-up, enabling the absorption and innovation of new technologies. This suggests that the innovation of sustainable technologies will also occur primarily in advanced countries, and subsequently adopted in less developed economies.

This research programme takes a different perspective. The urgent demand for sustainable solutions, the increasing globalisation of knowledge and technology, and the need to respond to complex social and market conditions, means that innovation of sustainable technologies can and does take place in less-developed contexts. This research aims to provide the first systematic attempt to inventory and understand the contribution of ‘sustainability experiments’ (defined as highly-novel, practice-oriented projects aiming to develop sustainable technologies). The programme aims to build upon and contribute to recent system innovation theories such as the Multi-Level-Perspective and Strategic Niche Management. Empirically the focus will be on electricity and mobility experiments in India and Thailand.

The programme exists of five sub-projects. We are currently seeking applications for 2 projects on electricity experiments in India and mobility experiments in Thailand. As a PhD student you will be collaborating in the programme with 2 PhD students in India and Thailand, and with a post-doctoral researcher in The Netherlands. The projects will include considerable fieldwork in the respective countries.

Requirements

We welcome applications from candidates with a Master degree and an excellent academic record in innovation studies and management, science, technology and society (STS) studies, development studies, history of technology, or other relevant MSc programs.

Erasmus Mundus MSc Scholarships in Science for International Students

: EM Food of Life is a cross-disciplinary Masters Course.
In a unique way, the course combines animal science and food science and technology.
EM Food of Life is offered by:

Non-EU and EU Students
The EM Food of Life Masters Course is open to non-EU and EU students.

Every year approx. 17-20 EU scholarships are available.
* Category A Scholarships for Third-Country nationals: Total € 48.000 EUR
* Category B Scholarships for European nationals and others complying with the 12 months rule: Total € 20.000

Category A scholarships can be awarded to masters students from all countries other than the 27 EU member states and the EEA-EFTA states: Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway. Furthermore, you must comply with the 12 months rule: you must not be a resident nor have carried out your main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of these countries.

Category B scholarships can be awarded to any masters students who do not fulfil the category A criteria defined above, i.e. nationality requirement and 12 months rule.

For both categories please note:
1. You must study in two of the consortium partner countries.
2. The two countries must be different from the country in which you obtained your last university degree.

It is possible to be admitted to the Course, even though you are not awarded a scholarship. You will then have to cover EM Food of Life participatory costs. If you finance your study yourself, you are allowed to study in the country of your last university degree.

Non-EU Scholars
Every year, the EM Food of Life Masters Course awards a limited number of scholarships to third-country scholars/guest lecturers, who wish to spend time at one of the four European partner institutions giving lectures, supervising projects, doing research etc.

The Department of Electrical Engineering covers the application of electrical phenomena with respect to energy transfer, telecommunication, and calculation and processing of information and the technology involved. Both hardware, in the form of electronic and/or optical circuits and accessories, and software, in the form of system software for electro-technical application, are the subject of study. Existing and new electrical and/or optical components and systems are analyzed, designed and realized. In addition, the maintenance of these systems is the subject of research, as is the relevance for society of electrical engineering and informatics.

This full-time position is within the Electro-Optical Communication Systems (ECO) group, part of the COBRA Research Institute, in the Department of Electrical Engineering. In the ECO group, research is done in the area of optical fiber communication networks and their supporting techniques, ranging from ultra-high capacity long distance transport and ultra-fast optical signal processing, to optical fiber techniques for providing broadband services to the user in access networks and in-home networks. Particularly relevant to this vacancy is the work on fiber-wireless communication, which we want to explore in the context of autonomic networking techniques.

The group is participating in the Netherlands Institute for Research on ICT (NIRICT). NIRICT comprises all ICT research of the three technical universities in the Netherlands: Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology, and the University of Twente. NIRICT brings together over 70 research groups from the disciplines of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and several ICT application domains. More than 1200 researchers collaborate, which makes NIRICT the most important ICT academic research partner in the Netherlands.

Requirements

Candidates for this position should have a strong MSc degree in electrical engineering or computer science (with hardware orientation), with emphasis on networking and/or network management. He/she should have a strong affinity with data communication techniques (optical and/or wireless) and some hands-on experience with computer programming.

Previous experience in any of the following areas will be considered as an advantage:

* reconfigurable networks (e.g., optical, wireless or ad-hoc networks)
* FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array) programming
* virtual and/or overlay networks (e.g., peer-to-peer networks)
