The position is available for a period of three years from January 2011.

The PhD fellowship is connected to the project Popular Music and Gender in a Transcultural context. The project is jointly funded by the Norwegian Research Council under the programme FRIHUM, and the University of Oslo, which will run from July 2010 through June 2014.

The main aim of this project is to consider the cultural construction of gender through popular music. The relevance of this project is to develop new theoretical insights into gendered performance, which will involve research within both a Norwegian and international context. While cultural and historical approaches will inform this project, the prime direction will be a reflective consideration of identity politics through critical musicology. Music’s visual representation is also of importance in this project, and audiovisual performativity constitutes a principal site for research attached to this post.

An important outcome of this project will be both the publication and mediation of research work in the field of popular music, with a specific emphasis on new perspectives within gender studies.

Requirements for applicants :

  • Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Musicology.

Qualifications and personal skills:

  • We are interested in projects of high quality of an innovative nature, which demonstrates an excellent grasp of the theoretical and methodological approaches within the field of popular musicology.
  • In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the quality of the project proposal as much as an assessment of the candidate’s ability to complete the dissertation within the given time frame. Candidates short-listed for this post will be called for an interview.

PhD Research Fellowship in Medical Instrumentation and Imaging for a Preclinical PET Scanner for International Students, Norway

The candidate for this position is expected to participate in the development of COMPET, a preclinical PET scanner with a novel concept for 3D event reconstruction and MRI compatibility. The detector technology is based on LYSO crystals, Wave Length Shifting (WLS) strips, and SiPM / MPPC-readout.  For the readout of the detector high speed FPGAs are used connected with an Ethernet interface to the computer farm. The project covers the assembly of the scintillators and the WLS in the detector, design and test of analog and digital hardware, FPGA firmware, programming and testing of readout and analysis software image reconstruction algorithms and detector simulation.

Requirements:

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in physics is required. Applicants that are close to completion of their Master degree can apply, but the committee is free to reject the application if the final Master degree is not completed in time for the committee’s decision.

The applicants should document their experience and expertise within the areas mentioned, and also their general experience within development of detectors for particle-, astro-, medical- or nuclear physics. The subject of the candidate’s master degree is expected to be closely related to one or more of the above mentioned research areas. Experience with lab work, programming (VHDL, Verilog, C/C++, Python, Cuda, LabView, root), image reconstruction, data analysis or Monte Carlo simulations (Gate) is an advantage.

In addition the applicants may submit a project proposal for the qualifying work during the program. The project proposal should include research topic, main issues, as well as choice of theory and method.

The purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.

The fellowship requires admission to the research training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. An approved plan for the research training, including a  project outline, must be submitteed no later than two months after taking up the position. For more information see:

PhD Research Fellowship in Evolutionary Biology for International Students, Norway

The PhD fellow will be part of a team working on the project “Tracking signatures of adaptive diversification during postglacial colonization in threespine stickleback”. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway.The overall aims of the project are to detect genomic regions and phenotypic traits under selection when sticklebacks invade fresh waters. To do this we will use a set of genetic methods, including SNP-genotyping and large-scale sequencing. Sticklebacks will be sampled in the field, based on prior information on phenotype distributions. Based on phenotypic and genotypic data the candidate will, depending on prior competence, investigate this adaptation process either using molecular genetic approaches or more statistically based methods. The PhD-candidate will work with supervisors at the CEES (L.A. Vøllestad, T.F. Hansen, K.S. Jakobsen, K. Østbye) and international collaborators (F. Volckaert, A. Nolte).

Requirements:

Applicants must hold a MSc-degree (or equivalent) and have experience in evolutionary biology, molecular biology, molecular genetics, population genetics or quantitative genetics – preferentially with solid experience in several of these field. Good analytical skills are necessary.

For this position, we seek a highly motivated, enthusiastic person with the ambition to gain insight and publish papers in leading, international journals. The successful candidate must be prepared to spend some periods abroad for training and cooperation.
