Doctoral Research Fellowship within the Project Edvard Munch, Norway

Position as Ph.D. (SKO 1017) is available at the Department of Philosophy, History of Art and Classics (IFIKK) at the Faculty of Humanities and is linked to the faculty’s PhD program, the line of music and theater studies, aesthetics, art and ideas.. The position is available for a period of three years.

The Ph.D project should focus on Edvard Munch and the wider set of contexts in which his artistic production took place. It is vital that the project deliver innovative approaches that may forge new directions for research on Munch.

Several generations of scholars at the University of Oslo have made significant contributions to the research on and around Edvard Munch. The art historical department at IFIKK aims to keep this traditional alive by highlighting Munch and Modernity as one of their strategic research areas.

For years research on Edvard Munch has been dominated by biographical approaches primarily focused on the relation between Munch’s life and work.  Today, Munch research at the University of Oslo places greater emphasis on the wider range of national and international contexts in which his work was produced and received, both with respect to its relation to other modern artists as well as to various social, political and aesthetic fields. In recent years, art historians at IFIKK have increased its international exchanges connected with Munch research and have contributed to a number of publications and curatorial projects both outside and inside Norway. The Ph.D fellow will take part in IFIKK’s plans to expand and deepen its research on Munch and Munch’s modernity and should contribute to the ongoing development of an international network of researchers devoted to this field of study. Close collaboration with the Munch Museum and the National Museum of Art, Norway is also an important component in this plan of action.

The successful candidate is expected to affiliate with the existing research milieu or network and to contribute to the further development of this.

Candidates who are accepted must participate in the Faculty of Humanities’ researcher education programme (cf. regulations and supplementary provisions for the faculty’s researcher education) and must also engage in the designated research activities on a 100 percent basis. The designated aim of the project is to complete a doctoral dissertation to be defended at a public disputation for the Ph.D.-degree.

Qualifications and Personal Skills :

In assessing the applications, special emphasis will be placed on the quality of the project description and on the assumed academic and personal ability on the part of the candidates to complete the dissertation within the given time frame. The short-listed candidates may be called for an interview at the University of Oslo.

A Master degree or equivalent in an area relevant to the topic of the doctoral dissertation.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Nanoelectronics, University of Oslo, Norway

The Department of Informatics (IFI) is one of nine departments belonging to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Oslo. IFI is Norway’s largest university department for general education and research in Computer Science and related topics. You can read more about the Department here: http://www.ifi.uio.no. The Department has near 800 students on bachelor level, near 300 master students, and over 200 PhD students. The totall staff of the Department is close to 250 employees, about 150 of these are full time scientific positions: about 60 Professors and Associate Professors

The fellowship period is 3 years. Within the framework of the position duties may be assigned. No one can be appointed for more than one specified period at the same institution.

Job Description: The current postdoc project can be devided into three subfields: A) Development of higher-order open-loop Delta-Sigma modulators for sensor data conversion, including noise and energy optimization, linearization and integration of CMOS and MEMS sensors. B) Development of impulse radio (IR-UWB) wireless systems where both impulse radar and communication solutions are explored in silicon using new and innovative design paradigms, facilitating power efficient implementations in CMOS. The postdoc will participate in several ongoing subprojects (positioning, RFID, RF-camera), and skills in RF chip design is important. C) Development of sparse asynchronous pixel-event vision sensors, inspired by the operation principles of the human eye. Such sensor nodes should communicate by low capacity, low power wireless links using an IR-UWB protocol. The candidate must have competence within at least one of those subfields.

The candidate must have a PhD or other corresponding education equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree nanoelectronics.

UiO (and Norway more generally) is a multi-lingual environment, where knowledge of Norwegian is not a necessity in everyday life. However, a good command of English is required.

PhD Fellowships at Bielefeld University, Germany

In the framework of an International Graduate College (International Research Training Group, supported by DFG) we offer fellowships for a PhD program starting October 1, 2010, for up to 3 years duration.

The program is organized by the Bielefeld University Mathematics Department in cooperation with the Departments of Economics and Physics, the research institutions IMW and BiBoS, and together with the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing (partner institutions: IAM, AMSS, GUCAS). Doctorate degrees will be awarded by one of the three Departments of Bielefeld University.

The interdisciplinary training and research program is oriented towards the study of modern methods in Stochastics and their application in Physics and Economics. A structured course program will enable students to undertake research projects without undue delay. Lectures and courses by visiting scientists, as well as the exchange program with China, will further contribute to a broad and internationally viable education.

Graduates (Master level) from the aforementioned three fields with a pronounced interest in Mathematics and its interdisciplinary applications are encouraged to apply.
