Scholarship for International Travel, University of Cape Town, South Africa

Scholarship for International Travel are available to assist Master’s and Doctoral students registered at the University of Cape Town to proceed to an approved international institution for purposes of a visiting scholars programme, for research, or for attendance at specific and approved courses.  The awards are intended for individual senior students and have been established to enhance the research activities being conducted for the completion of the degree.

  • No applications for renewal or extension will be considered.  The awards are restricted to one award per student, per DEGREE. Only ONE application at Master’s level and ONE at Doctoral level can be submitted.  Where students are upgraded from the Masters degree, a second application can be submitted at Doctoral level, but only after 12 months of registration at Doctoral level.
  • UCT Scholarships for International Travel and UCT Conference Travel Grants cannot be held concurrently in any one year.
  • Only students in the first and second years of Master’s study and the first, second or third years of doctoral study, will be considered. (3rd year Masters and 4th year PhD students are NOT ELIGIBLE).
  • Successful applicants are required to submit a full report on the work completed and the time spent at the international institution.  The reports must be submitted to the DVC for Research and Innovation, c/o the PFO, within three weeks of the student’s return to UCT.  The report must illustrate the value of the time spent abroad.  Such reports may be included or referred to in the University’s Annual Research Report.  Failure to submit the required report will result in cancellation of the scholarship and withdrawal of the funds provided.
  • Before payment  can be made of any award offered, successful applicants are required to show evidence that the balance of funds required has been secured.
  • NOTE:  There are two rounds of application/award per annum:
  • Students applying to travel abroad in April, May, June, July, and August , September 2010 must submit their applications by no later than 28 February 2010.
  • Students applying to travel abroad in October, November, December 2010 and January, February and March 2011 must submit their applications by no later than 31 August 2010.

Erasmus Mundus Masters Course in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Applications are now accepted for AstroMundus, a 2years international Master Course in Astronomy and Astrophysics offered by a partnership of 5 universities: University of Innsbruck (Austria), University of Padova and University of Rome “Tor Vergata” (Italy), University of Goettingen (Germany), and University of Belgrade (Serbia). The Master Course is funded by the European Commission within the Erasmus Mundus programme, 2nd Edition, Action 1.

The course is open to students of all nationalities. Admitted students will conduct their studies in at least 2 and up to 4 of the partner Universities and, upon successful completion of their studies, they will be awarded a Joint Master Degree by all universities where they studied during the Master Course. The course is held in the English language, however students will have the possibility to learn the language of the host countries through courses offered by the host universities. Eligible students have a certified good knowledge of the English Language and hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, or Mathematics, or an equivalent amount of certified learning (3 years, 180 ECTS credits) in the same field(s). A number of Erasmus Mundus scholarships are available both for non-European and European students. The admission to the Master Course and assignment of scholarships are based on excellence.

Deadline for applications: November 30th 2010 for both Non-European and European students. The Master Course starts in September 2011.

Melbourne International Research Scholarships (MIRS), Australia

The Melbourne International Research Scholarships (MIRS) is awarded to international students wishing to undertake graduate research degree studies at the University of Melbourne, Australia. MIRSs are funded by the University with each faculty having a limited number to award.

Number of Scholarships:

Each year the University offers about 220 new Melbourne Research Scholarships (MRSs), of which about 100 are normally awarded to international students as MIRSs.

Eligibility criteria:

To be considered for a MIRS, applicants need to have an unconditional offer of a place in a graduate research degree course (eg. masters by research, PhD or other research doctorate) at the University of Melbourne. Please click on the following link for further information concerning the eligibility criteria.

MIRS applicants should submit their ‘Application for Admission: International Graduate Student‘ form (PDF) or online application by 31 October 2010. Applications received after this date will only be considered for any MIRSs that remain at the time the application is assessed for scholarship.
In order to be considered for the greatest range and number of scholarships, it is highly recommended that you submit your application by the IPRS closing date of 31 August 2010.
